For Belfast, City of Beautiful Girls

Story Behind The Song

When I was attending Irish language school in Donegal, most of my classmates were teachers from the Republic counties who needed to take the course as a job requirement, but there were also some young people from the Northern counties who did not receive any economic incentive whatsoever; they were simply there for the love of their culture and language, in some cases driving across the border every day. That, to me, is beautiful.

Lyrics

(I mBĂ©arla)

1.
I was born and raised in Beal Feirste
The town that I call my own.
It's been too long since I've seen Beal Feirste
And I'm longing for to go home.

REFRAIN.

How I long to be in Beal Feirste
Beal Feirste, more precious than pearls
I shall live my life in Beal Feirste
The city of beautiful girls.

2. We cheer for the girls at Camogie
We cheer for the boys at Peil
Sometimes there's cheatin' and fightin'
But it's all a good craic, just as well.

(REFRAIN)

3. Some say we're more Irish than Irish;
Well, we've certainly no wish to offend.
But when we were born, we were Irish
And we'll be Irish when our days end.

(FINAL REFRAIN)
