Story Behind The Song
I was walking home one night with my two daughters, ages 7 and 4. I was looking ahead, not at them, and at one point I heard them laughing, so I stopped and looked at them. They were having so much fun with each other, and so filled with joy at that moment, I realized that they had lives and paths that were separate from all the worrying I did about how I was going to take care of my family. In that moment I felt that their joyfulness had a power and energy of its own, and that my worrying was not going to change that. Although the original inspiration for the song was both of my daughters, I felt that the lyrics would be stronger if it was sung by a father (or mother) to one daughter.
Song Description
The song begins with a father pledging his love and support to his young daughter. Knowing that he will eventually have to let her go when she's older, he begins to worry about how she will make her way in the world. When he realizes how beautiful and joyful she is, though, he begins to relax and to feel that even without his protection and direct guidance, she will be fine.
