Fate

Story Behind The Song

I had just broken up with a fellow, but we were still circling around each other for a time. I wrote the song out of frustration that things were just not being said... thought about a lot, but never vocalized. The situation eventually drifted to nothing after a lot of time was lost to it. I wished I had demanded a concrete 'yes' or 'no' but couldn't help but find some hope in the ambiguity. I fashioned the vocals as whispery in spots and very loud and throaty in others, back-and-forth and up-and-down, to lend to the mood of the piece, and I played the acoustic as a melodic instrument to start, then moved it into a percussive, supportive position later in the song, layering an alternative-styled barely there electric guitar to add some urgency.

Song Description

Wistful acoustic guitar-driven mildly electronic ballad that grows layer by layer and progresses from electronic folk into edgy-but-tasteful alt-pop-rock.

Lyrics

VERSE 1:

Scary but it’s true, that all I have to do
Is look into your eyes to see how things have changed
All I needed from you—someone to believe who believed in me—
No longer is my heart still chained

CHORUS 1A:

All you have to do is say you feel the same way
All you have to do is say you feel the same way
‘Cause things are gonna change…
don’t leave it up to Fate…

VERSE 2:

I saw you today walking up in town
Wearing your disguise, pretending not to see me…
So how does one go on? When you’re all that I need
to survive this burn that I thought I could forget…

CHORUS 2A:

All you have to do is say you feel the same way
All you have to do is say you feel the same way

CHORUS 2B:

Just say what’you’re your mind then
Don’t let it go too long now
‘Cause things are gonna change…
don’t leave it up to Fate…

BRIDGE:

Isn’t it so strange
How we go to pieces?
It seems like only yesterday, well…
Now I can return!!

CHORUS OUTS A & B ( x 2 ):

All you have to do is say you feel the same way
All you have to do is say you feel the same way
Just say what’you’re your mind then
Don’t let it go too long now
‘Cause things are gonna change…
don’t leave it up to Fate…
