Someone Walks Away

Story Behind The Song

This was a song written from one of my first experiences with love. The girl I was seeing was in Seattle for college and like many kids who move away from home from school she kept wondering if she had made the right choice in coming to the West Coast. In the end she left and the relationship ended. At the time I was heartbroken and hurt but in hindsight my time with her was valuable and there was great treasure in the tears that I shed. I brought this song to my songwriting partner about half completed with a verse and chorus. At the time he was going through a breakup of his own and approached the second verse from his perspective. We got together to work on the arrangement and bridge and recorded this song with producer Ken Stringfellow (Posies, Big Star, REM) at Mars studio Seattle, WA.

Song Description

Someone Walks Away is an optimistic song about love that has moved on and letting go. The protagonist of the song has lost his love but comes at the song from a positive approach telling the story of someone who has had their heart broken but does not harbor pain and instead lets it go. Despite the tragedy of his loss the message is that it is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. "There is treasure in the tears when someone walks away."

Lyrics

Goodbye my sweet girl
It's gonna be okay
You'll be back in your mama's arms by the dawn
Just go get on that plane
Don't worry about me
I will count the rainy days while you are gone

Make 'em smile make 'em sing
Revel in the joy you bring
Even as our hearts are wondering what's in store
And you left to make it right
So gather love with all your might
Go find the answers you've been looking for

Phones ringing far and wide
(Only you know the answer)
From hopes to foolish pride
(You made good on your plans)
You went home and I'm out wandering this town
But I know you couldn't wait
(The wanderlust will lead you)
And though the hour is late
(Well are we meant to be)
I will love you even if you let me down

Make 'em smile make 'em sing
Revel in the joy you bring
Even as our hearts are wondering what's in store
And you left to make it right
So gather love with all your might
Go find the answers you've been looking for

Madness in the years
Distance in the days
There's treasure in the tears
When someone walks away

Make 'em smile make 'em sing
Baby it's the joy you bring
Even as our hearts are knocking at the door
And you left to make it right
So gather love with all your might
Go find the answers you've been looking for
Go find the answers you've been looking for
Go find the answers you've been looking for
