Story Behind The Song
The melody came to me after being at the Songwriting Academy at Sisters, Oregon last year. The song was inspired by my relationship with Lori, a late in life romance. After the kids are gone...after sometimes making decisions to do things that I thought I was supposed to do rather than what my heart wanted. The line, Finally Got it Right, came to me as a statement about finally making choices that came from honoring my heart, and stepping forward. Bob Hahn came up with the metaphor of two 'understudies' who fall in love, and we ended up co-writing the song together.
Song Description
A soft, joyful love song about two people who love each other finally coming together. The song uses an extended metaphor of two understudies who finally come into the spotlight.

Lyrics
The footlights faded hours ago
The crowd has long gone home
I see you in the shadows
Standing all alone
You played your understudy role
Just as well as me
I heard the songs of longing
I dreamed you sang to me
Step out from the wings my love
Cause we're way past opening night
No more rehearsing
Cause we finally got it right
Meet me in the garden
We'll leave our roles behind
No outside prompts or audience
You know your part, I know mine
So many ways of following
But that is just the art
The strange new place we stand outside
Opens only for our hearts
We could live our lives in shadows
Always waiting for a call
Let's you and I break free from that
And take a risk to have it all
