Last Ride on Devil's Slide

Story Behind The Song

Uptempo Rockabilly/Bluegrass song about a fugitive couple careening south along the California coast to their doom.

Song Description

Last Ride on Devil's Slide pays tribute to that infamous stretch of California's Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara, where the road was carved into a notoriously unstable area high above the rocks and pounding surf. It has recently been bypassed by a new tunnel. The song tells the tale of an outlaw couple speeding down the coast along the highway to their almost certain demise. The track features brilliant performances by Lee Parvin on piano and vocals, Thad Beckman on guitar, Jim Kerwin on acoustic bass, Danny Montgomery on drums, and Nancy Hall on background vocals.

Lyrics

LAST RIDE ON DEVIL'S SLIDE
Parvin & Patterson © 2013

Well you'd better check to see the lights are on now
'Cause I can barely see the road
And you'd better take the time buckle up now
Safety first isn't that the code?
Well just up the hill the abyss is callin'
Where the highway sags and the pavement's fallin'
It's time to atone for the skeletons we're haulin'
This is our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide

Well I'd sure like to say that it's been fun now
But my knuckles are permanently white
And I couldn't say you've taught me how to love now
I just learned to hold on tight
Well we might make it to Montara if the gods are willin'
Ain't been no bed of roses babe but it's been thrillin'
You told me all along we would make a killin'
Now it's our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide

Bridge:
Ain't nothin' but a landslide on the left now
And a black and angry void on the right
The mist seems to bow and step aside now
As we carve our way south through the night
Well I hear the surf a' poundin' somewhere far below
With you my fallen angel in the dashboard glow
But baby there's just no way to outrun the radio
This is our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide

This is our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide
It's our last ride on Devil's Slide
