Danger is My Business

Story Behind The Song

I set out to write a complete whodunit in song form. Where I got the idea...I dunno.

Song Description

The story has a complete plot-- with beginning, middle and surprise ending. The detective is quite astute, as when he discovers a body after stumbling over his feet which were sticking out from under the bed. It's a fun song with lots of visual imagery.

Lyrics

Danger Is My Business © m. drumm, 2002

The lady looked nervous, so I fixed her a drink
It was whiskey and water from the kitchen sink
She said "I gotta job that's risky, but you might end up dead…"
I said "Danger is my business Ma'am, just go right ahead"

She said "My husband's missing, I don't know what to do."
Her hair was black, she was stacked, her eyes were very blue
"He won half a million dollars in a backgammon game
From 'Light-finger Louie' I believe was his name."

I paid a call on Louie, but Louie was dead.
A .38 lay smokin' right beside him on the bed
I was wondering who had filled him full of lead,
When an atom bomb exploded on the back of my head

I woke up on the floor of a sleazy motel
My head was spinning 'round, my ears were ringing like a bell
"Good morning merry sunshine" said a gravelly voice
It was light-finger Louie and a redhead named Joyce

"Well how come you're still breathin'?" I asked him with a grin
He said the corpse was Huey, his identical twin
He said Huey put the money inside a purple vase
I grabbed his Smith and Wesson, and I kicked him in the face

A Lincoln Continental was parked right outside
I found Louie's car keys and I went for a ride
I pressed on the buzzer, was a bright sunny day,
She answered the door in a black negligeé

I searched the apartment, I was lookin' for clues
I stumbled on a pair of cordovan shoes
I saw two feet were stickin' out from under the bed
"Well, I think I found your husband Ma'am." "Is he…?" "Yes," I said.

I found five hundred grand in a violet vase
On the mantlepiece above the fireplace
I said "Lady, you've got some explaining to do
'Cause your story, it don't ring true."

"My husband, whose body is under the bed
Killed Louie my lover's twin brother," she said
I heard splintering wood, then a terrible roar
And Louie came crashing through the living room door.

His eyes were like ice, his teeth clenched in hate
He lifted his pistol a little too late
He spoke three words, then he fell over dead
"Nice shot Gumshoe," was all that he said

I turned to the lady with my gun in my hand
I said "There's still one thing that I don't understand
Your husband killed Huey, now Louie's dead too
Do we agree that the killer of your husband was you?"

The cops came in time to hear her confess
They hauled out the bodies, the place was a mess
They said I was clear, but I shouldn't leave town
I said "Not while that fine redhead Joyce is around"
