Stalker With A Walker

Story Behind The Song

The idea for this song came from a comment I made to my brother, Mark. When asked about my love life, I commented that it consisted of a customer service rep who, because it was his job, was forced to have conversations with me and a "stalker with a walker." We happened to be in an elevator at the time and the other inhabitant burst out laughing (as did we). I was longing to write a song about a "Stalker with a Walker" and convinced my brother, Scott, with whom I'd collaborated on two musicals previously, that the next musical we co-wrote needed to revolve around the stalker with a walker. Next thing you know, "Old Folks at Home" emerged and it was great fun to watch Russ Cole, who played Melvin, the stalker at the assisted living facility, perform this number with other members of the incredible cast. By the way, that's Scott singing the part of Melvin on this recording.

Lyrics

V1: There's nothing wrong with Melvin that a little medication won't manage to control
He's a big go-getter and a known bed wetter
That's something they don't need to know
He's just a big talker and, according to his doctor
His bark's worse than his bite
But just in case, to be safe, the ladies lock their doors at night

He's a talker with a walker
Don't let it bother you
Just a talker with a walker
He never follows through

V2: Forgive me if I brag about how I taught Jimi Hendrix how to play a mean guitar
And I have to tell you there are some who say that I can play the drums better than Ringo Starr
And doesn't Mick Jagger owe his signature swagger to the way I move on stage
I'd still be moving groovy but my plastic hip precludes me
Not to mention this damn old age

I'm a rocker with a walker
How do you do
Just a rocker with a walker
Who wants to rock with you

V3: Melvin is delusional and we have all refused him so he acts like he's seen better days
The only thing he shared with Hendrix was his love of psychedelics
He's still living in a purple haze
I doubt he could bring Ringo round to play a game of Bingo
Much less beat upon his drum
He's a Mick Jagger wannabe - I recommend that if you see him coming you ought to run

He's a stalker with a walker
A pervert through and through
Just a stalker with a walker
We're just warning you
He's a stalker with a walker
Believe us when we say
He's a stalker with a walker
Look out! He's coming this way
