Everyday Choices

Story Behind The Song

I don't usually co-write but, every so often, someone or something comes along that prompts a writing collaboration. I became friends with Mark Shaltz and his wife and learned he enjoys composing on the piano. He didn't do much with lyrics (although he wrote a pretty cool song for his sister called "This is My Exit" which I got to sing). We decided to see what a Shaltz-Detroit collaboration would sound like. He had the idea of a song about how everything you do defines you. We sat down one day and came up with Everyday Choices. It was so rewarding we decided to write more songs together. My brother, Scott, selected this song to be in our musical "Devil May Care."

Everyday Choices

V1: It's the road that you're taking,
The choices you're making
Some seem so simple
And others so hard
Looking at the big picture,
Wondr'ing how you can get there
When a crack in the sidewalk
Catches you off guard
So busy thinking about tomorrow
How do you think you got this far?
You're the sum of your everyday choices - that's who you are

V2: Another decision
Could be hitting or missing
The only think you can count on
Always another fork in the road
That road's always teaching
That the secrets you're keeping
Become the life that you're reaping
From all the seeds you've sowed
You might decide to take a new direction
If you only knew how far it is from here
You're the sum of your everyday choices - that's pretty clear

Bridge: There's no way to predict the future
And there's nothing you can do about the past
The only thing you have control of
Is how you live day-by-day, how you love along the way

V3: Pulling up to the stoplight
Do you turn left or turn right?
You'll get to a destination
No matter which way you go
But if you think you can borrow
Against tomorrow
Just remember today
Was tomorrow not long ago
It might be time to pause for some reflection
About the path you've been on this far
You're the sum of your everyday choices
We are the sum of everything we've ever done
We're the sum of our everyday choices
That's who we are
