Did You Say You'd Be Comin' Back

Story Behind The Song

When I was living in Detroit and making my living performing and recording jingles, I was approached by a young man by the name of Larry Hover who wondered if I might sing on a demo of a song he had written. He came over to my house and recorded the rough version of the song so I could learn it. Years later, I thought about the song as I was putting together my musical memoirs. I always loved it. But I couldn't remember Larry's name and didn't know how to find the song. Wracking my brain, I also wracked my collection of cassette tapes (yes, I know!) and, hallelujah!, I found the long-forgotten home recording. One problem - Larry name was smudged so I couldn't see it clearly. I thought and thought about it over some period of time and, somehow, one day, the light went on in my head. "Larry Hover!" I quickly entered his name into google (where else?) and found his website. Larry is now a Christian-genre singer-songwriter who still writes and performs. I contacted him through his website and asked if he remembered me. Well, he did and he gave me permission to record his poignant song. My producer, Bill Bentley, gave it a make-over, turning it into an acoustic, slow jazzy number from its original country interpretation. Don't know what Larry really thinks about this version but he said he likes it. Thanks, Larry.

Lyrics

Did You Say You'd Be Comin' Back

V1: Well, you just had to get away
I remember in every detail
It's not the kind of night I might forget
Not an item slips my mind
Even down to the shoes you were wearing
But I just can't say exact
Did you say you'd be comin' back

V2: Seems like only yesterday
We were filled with our hopes and our dreaming
Now my dreams reside on the other side of the door
I can hear your footsteps fade
Feel the tears on my face as you're leaving
But the one detail I lack
Did you say you'd be comin' back

Bridge: At any other time, with any other guy
I just know I wouldn't hurt so bad
I had an aching at the start and a breaking of the heart
And a feeling like I never had
I know no one gets to live without it
Yeah, we've all got to get the blues
But there's noone so sad, none that's half as bad
As me without you

V3: I confess I did my best to see
As you put your belongings together
In your suitcase, did you pack
Any plans for coming back
Did you say you'd be comin' back
