Lyrics

Haiku Breakup
Donna Dennihy ©2010

She handed you a piece of paper
Her love expressed in a haiku
By the third line you stopped smiling
That's where she broke up with you

You put one hand in your pocket
A haiku in your pocket for her
Disappeared when you pushed it in deeper
While reading again those five words

First she wrote, I said we'd marry
But I can't, I'm not, I won't
The last line was the one
That made you come undone
My love's not for you, she wrote

She said you should have seen this coming
If you read between the lines you'd a seen
You counted each and every syllable
She killed your love in seventeen

Then you took your haiku from your pocket
With a pen you crossed out what wasn't right
You scribbled and counted in anger
It was better than having a fight

You wrote, I really, no.... I never loved you
Since you can't, you're not, you won't
In your words without rhyme you wrote
For me that's just fine
I cant, I'm not, and I won't

You were words without rhyme
You stabbed her seventeen times
Now she can't, she's not and she won't
