Story Behind The Song
When the Moors murderess Myra Hindley died, I read a newspaper article which told of how she had been attracted to Ian Brady by his clean fingernails. That was the starting point for a song that tries to humanise someone who has been de-humanised since her collusion in the murders. The voice in the first and third verses belongs to her. The second and fourth verse narrative belongs to all of us.

Lyrics
He was the only man I ever knew
With clean fingernails
I thought he was so different
I fell under his spell
How did you feel
When your lover
Cut Pauline like a pig?
I did everything I could
To make him notice me
I'd given up the ghost till that dance
Under the Christmas tree
How did you feel
When Lesley Anne
Begged you for her life?
