I'm Talkin' To You

Story Behind The Song

We were in a pub in Dublin, and overheard a young couple arguing. They looked passionate and desperate at the same time. The young woman's anger was all directed square at her boyfriend, who just looked like he wanted to run away. The lyrics in this song are the back story we made up to capture the emotion we heard in their argument.

Song Description

A hot-looking young woman hunts down her no-show boyfriend on a Saturday night. She finds him in a pub enjoying a pint, and confronts him, telling him she's pregnant. He muses about the life he thought he'd have, and contemplates running off to the airport to get away.

Lyrics

I'm Talkin' to You
by Tom and Mary Erangey, copyright 2010

Slow Intro: I never thought it'd come to this
All it was was just a kiss
Hey I'm talkin to you

Verse 1 - HER:
It's Saturday night you're late again
One more time you forgot our plans
Hey, I'm talkin to you
I slam the door and I'm on the street
Turning heads like a bitch in heat
Hey, I'm talkin to you

V1 - HIM:
'Cuz I was in there having a nice pint
You walk in, talking a big fight
Hands in the air you call me a gobshite, yeah

Verse 2 - HER:
What do you mean when you say we're done
My belly's big, we've just begun
Hey, I'm talkin to you
Why do you think I'm trapping you
Don't you know that I got dreams too
Hey, I'm talking to you

V2 - HIM:
'Cuz I always thought I'd be living the high life
And by my side I'd be sportin a good wife
Now it looks like a hundred percent strife, yeah

You always said I was a little bit lazy
Walking round like a chicken gone crazy
Then you tell me you're having a baby, yeah

Bridge: Now, I'm headed for the airport
Passport and suitcase in my hand
Don't know where I'm going, but I'm leaving
Guess I'll know where when I land
I guess I'll know where when I land

Verse 3 - HER:
What do you see when you're on your back
And the walls close in like a heart attack
Hey, I'm talking to you
What do you do when the morning comes
And the daylight hurts and you want to run
Hey, I'm talking to you

V3 - HIM:
'Cuz I always thought I'd be living the high life
And by my side I'd be sportin a good wife
Now it looks like a hundred percent strife, yeah

When I was in school they told me I was smart
Be successful no need to work hard
Life is ironic, 'cuz now I'm a lost cause, yeah

I was in there having a nice pint
You walk in, talking a big fight
Hands in the air you call me a gobshite, yeah

Bridge: Now, I'm headed for the airport
Passport and suitcase in my hand
Don't know where I'm going, but I'm leaving
Guess I'll know where when I land
I hope someday you'll understand

Verse 4:
Why do you think I'm trapping you
Don't you know that I got dreams too
Hey, I'm talking to you
