My Interest in Music

My daddy played the guitar and sang a few songs around the house I grew up in. He showed me a few chords and riffs like Wildwood Flower and Brown’s Ferry Blues but I never did much with them. In high school a friend of mine got pretty hot at stroking them Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes like Sweet Home Alabama and Gimme Three Steps. Listening to him play got me on the guitar picking wagon along about graduation time. I talked him into teaching me a few tricks and from there I just kept beating on it until the noise sounded almost like music. I never could sing much and wasn’t born with any talent for making music. No matter. I did what I did for my own enjoyment, and I am still doing it for the same reason 31 years later.

I wrote a few love songs when the woman who is now my wife was content to not be. Four of them are pitched on this web page. Those were tough times and the songs that came out of them are tough to listen to. I think While You’re Sleeping is perhaps the best of the four. At least it’s my favorite. Other than those, I have written and recorded 105 tunes. Most of them are re-tellings of Bible stories or expressions of my own Christian viewpoints. Some are praise / worship-like things, some are sarcastic, some are comical, and some are self-analyzers. All of them are done in folk / country / rock type styles made by cheap acoustic, electric, and bass guitars all mixed up with a keyboard / drum pad and assorted barn yard noises that I called singing. I wrote the lyrics and made all of the sounds for each song here. I used Cakewalk software and a regular old pc for recording.

I don’t consider myself a musician, only a songwriter. I don’t play in a band and I don’t perform for any gatherings of people. What I get satisfaction out of is starting with nothing and creating a song that pleases me, both lyrically and musically. I record the things I write so I can enjoy listening to them. If anybody else can say they enjoy listening to them also, then good. All the same, I’ll be keeping my day job.

If you like anything you hear here, drop me a line and say so. It would be nice to hear something good about my stuff once in a while. I will update the page periodically and throw in some different tunes along the way. If you get the notion, check it out.
