Changeling

Sometimes the fairies have need of a particular skill within their particular group and take the step of seeking out a newborn child from a non-faery family traditionally gifted with this skill. The newborn child undergoes a 'change' whereby an enchanted faery child is transmuted with a human child - this child is a 'changeling' - the parents of the 'faery child' start to notice uncanny traits, a certain knowingness, a wit and 'feyness' which has been hitherto undetected even by the elders of the family. This becomes more prevalent with age and is more noticeable during the approach to adulthood, by which time it is obviously way too late, the time between human world and faerie world running entirely unconnectedly.
