Chris Mathias is a genre-spanning, eclectic talent. Walking the boulevard of his musical experimentations, you first pass a set of moody acoustic/folk rock songs that explore dark introspection, and the emotional side of human interaction. But not everyone can be deep all the time.
Sitting just next door is Midnight Snack, a group whose goal is to bring back the fun side of music. Taking cues from jazz, blues-rock, and the songs of the 50's, Midnight Snack works by blending these forms into a cohesive whole, while adding their own gritty, modern touch. The net result is an upbeat, fun sound that gets you toe tapping and smiling. Sometimes silly, sometimes poignant, the Midnight Snack sound can bridge many audio outlets, including pop, country, adult contemporary, and alternative rock.
Across the street is a surprising contrast. Welcome to F.P.C. Nobody can be happy all the time, and if Midnight Snack is the 'sunny side of your life', well then, F.P.C. is the brutal blood moon that assassinates the sunset and brings on the night with a scream and a howl. F.P.C. explores a multitude of social and government issues, attacking the inequities of our society on all fronts. It's metal with a brain; thoughtful and provoking, but hard-core enough to get the new-school and old-school metal heads together in the mosh pit.
Just down the way from dark brood of F.P.C. is a post-modern alternative style, reminiscent of Radiohead or Muse. He calls the project Sane. It contains his latest writings, and is the current outlet for exploring the madness. It's both introspective and extraspective (a word made up just for Sane) at the same time.
Strolling further, you find traces of funk, adult-contemporary, and even new-age instrumentals (under the project name Tao's Dream). You look around, and notice all of these songs and sounds retain a common thread – a unique touch. This touch is an originality that finds its way into all of his productions. Aside from all this writing, Chris records, engineers, and produces all of the material for these projects. It's a chaotic journey, but a rewarding one, and he invites all of you to step out onto the boulevard and take it with him.
