" I am not a legend. In my eyes I haven't done anything yet. This is only the beginning" This response is from a young local songwriting/ producing talent by the name of Eugene James, to a statement thats made to him quite frequently, He is often referred to as a legend. Although that is a very humble response, he is no stranger to the gospel and jazz scene in Kansas City. In fact his rich history in music began at the tender age of 10, when he discovered his desire to learn to play the drums. This ambitious child searched for a teacher until his now godfather/mentor Donald Kelly took him under his wings and showed him the ropes. From then he practiced, practiced and practiced some more and the rest is written in history. By age 16 he was one of the top select percussionist in Kansas City and was continuously on call by numerous local and national recording artists. He received numerous gospel and jazz awards for his performance and competed in local talent shows. His talent was described as " crazy and "unreal" by young drummers watching from the sidelines. This gift was clearly God-given but what no one realized was that he used his gift as a way of expressing a bond between his passion for music and his pain from life. In 2004 he faced one of the biggest milestones in his life and was in search of a way to cope with the pain, so he turned to what he knew best....music. Eugene discovered his ability to write and wrote his first song entitled "Home", which was inspired by the passing of his brother that year. Rather than lie down and feel sorry for himself he decided that he wanted to use his experiences and life lessons to help others. In January of 2006, god gave Eugene a vision. Through this vision 1 Voice was born. Eugene took all his collective musical gifts and put together a group that would lyrically minister to the brokenhearted and musically soothe the soul. After writing songs and producing tracks for about 3 months, he decided that it was time to answer his calling, and use his gifts for the purpose in which it was given him. His first debut concert/recording took place on May 28, 2006. In this project five original songs: We worship, More, Thank you for Dying on the Cross, You Can Make It Through Your Nights, and his 2004 debut song "Home", were recorded and marked the beginning of a new era in this writer/producers life. From there Eugene founded a production label by the name of Drummerboy Music Productions, in which he is currently in the process of establishing. Producing primarily for local gospel artist, he has now extended to the mainstream, producing tracks for various neo-soul, r&b, and jazz artist. He works prestigiously to build a company that will help others and is always willing to learn more. In a lot of peoples eyes he has accomplished a lot, but this future star refers to his history as only the beginning.
