Thanks for the review, it's my first. You were very kind and made my day actually, thank-you. You are right about the mix, i tend to rush everything and not finish things but you've just confirmed, i need to be taking more time for my tracks. Thanks again :)

So is it the beat or the bass that defines Dubstep?

If it's the beat then your review makes sense...

Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

Thanks for your time regardless. I understand our expectations can really effect the scores a reviewer can leave... I used to trash wanna-be industrial productions over failed expectations as well.

Good luck with your work and thank you for your time again.

Dubstep is a very versatile genre but there are a few solid characteristics. 140bpm with a 2-step drum beat, a wobble and sub bass. The song I reviewed was a 4 on the floor pattern. I'm not trashing your song at all, in fact I enjoyed your song it was just in the wrong category.

raccune,

Thanks for the write back so promptly. I decided to preview some of your work to check out the Dubstep available.

I really liked your vocal glitching and the sounds were all traditional Dubstep indeed. I would have really enjoyed a little more pump in your vox leads, but totally get where you're at regarding the classification of Dubstep after a listen to your work.

I recognize a lot of the patches and sounds associated in what you're using musically. A lot of familiar tricks well executed surely. Great use in arrangement and not over crowding your mix either.

I recently picked up several Dubstep libraries and have yet to really sit down with them. I did take the time to preview everything though and have to say I'm looking forward to putting together a traditional Dubstep demo.

Up to now I've primarily sequenced it all from scratch and would build the sound design myself, no samples, the "Boomda" series was all ground up. Took me a good year and a half to figure out how to build certain sounds and I'm still exploring. Have yet to master the Skrillex growl, haven't mastered the vocal mashup, and on occasion can't sequence a chord change for the life of me. "Just play the scale three octaves high!!! Shut up! No ones listening, just do it!!!" lol

Its not my first genre of production though, thats for sure. So obviously... I'll fudge the rules regarding its labeling in contrast to a devout Dupstep listener.

I just use a lot of elements that are undeniably Dubstep in "The New Gameplan" and have no idea where to put it regarding categorization due to the sick bass action.

I had another reviewer take on "Resurgere" and he kind of blasted me over the genre, scored low over Rock/Metal elements and didn't care for it in general, your mentioning wash't a blast though, it was well received after I chewed on your own material:)

Years ago though... I used to specialize in Industrial Production. I would often eagerly review other industrial producers with an expectation at times. I wanted Reznor in every review... And if it wasn't Reznor... I at least wanted something in that vein.

I never got Reznor... I'd get stock beds, crazy sequencing, and on a rare occasion... Diamonds in the rough.

I'd usually leave a few positive comments and then write a novel on "But here's what you did wrong."

When artist would slop something completely non-industrial into the reviews, it even more often led to a level of bias in myself that damaged objectivity being "I wanted to review an Industrial song, not this, now I will punish you..." (smiles.)

It took me a while to balance my objectivity and to just accept each track for the unique production it was.

Regardless... I'm not implying anything. I'm sorry my choice of words wasn't better. I just took a look at that mix, compared it to a few others regarding production value/engineering/arrangement/origi nality and felt it important to ask "What went wrong? Why are these scores average? How could I do it better? He had excellent positive comments but the scores reflected a different thing. It must be a fail in the production."

After a two day train ride, I must confess, I let my ego get the better of me for a sentence (haha)... Regardless, I do have questions, I thought I'd consult a producer who knows Dubstep before running my mouth:)

I'm more of a hybridizer when it comes to my original productions. Not any one thing... But more so many elements culminating into an original package thats hard to say "Its rock, its dance, its house, its pop, its folk, it orchestral."

Nope... Epic fail in the "stick to one genre" department. lol

Anyhow... I'm rambling and may have train lag, sorry of I came off anything less than neutral, just curious...

I appreciate your time regarding your review on "The new Gameplan," and encourage you to dig deeper into your constructive feedback in the future, you may have more advice to offer than you realize.

Best:

Oh, and... Pleasure to meet you:)

I'm actually in Washington State on business today. Renting a vehicle in Seattle come morning and will be doing a quick tour.

Do you perform live or are you solely studio?

Welcome to Washington! I lived in Seattle for a while and love it there. Thanks for the reply, I get what you're saying about mixing elements of different genres into your songs instead of just sticking to one. I think that's a cool thing to do. I wasn't always into electronic music, in fact I was in metal/hardcore bands first and for a really long time and I use elements from the experience I had in those times in my music now. I think that the whole idea of genre mixing in songs is really cool, I'm actually slowly working on a project right now in which that's the whole idea. But I've also found that my songs in which I stay focused on the genre, Mairen Javier and Slide Daddy being undeniable dubstep, have received a much bigger positive response because they don't stray.

I just thought I would comment on the category of your song because just a simple change in drum pattern or tempo can change the genre of the song. There's a lot of drum and bass that use "dubstep wobble" type bass. It wasn't because I disliked the song in any way and that's why I gave it a positive review.

Oh I do perform live as well.

I grew up on Montly Crew, G&R, Slayer.

Then I moved on to Nails, Gravity Kills, Curve.

It wasn't until Hackers came out that I started to appreciate electronica. "Cowgirl" by underworld converted me surely.

Went out and purchased "dubnobasswithmyheadman" and never went back.

Since then I've been open to just about everything.

My latest find was "infected mushroom." They realesed and album called "friends on mushrooms volume 2" and it blew my mind.

Shoot me a pm and I'll share a copy provided you buy it if you like it. It's epic Dubstep blending without ever really going all out Dubstep.

I'm developing several projects for clients these last few months but am perfecting the blend. I'm moving to Australia on the 30th and will be setting up a new studio there.

Getting one of those trash can macs:)

I'm excited to throw my east west and Komplete on apple's new flash drive hardware.

So when you perform live... Tell me a little about your process. What gear do you use? Do you hit play or have a series of manual triggers?

Oh and seriously... Don't sweat the scores.

Some people leave 3's for making industry standard.

The 4's & 5's are reserved for the kats that go above and beyond regarding our personal tastes.

I'm perfectly cool with industry standard. It was just an off day after a long train ride from Albuquerque to Seattle.

I'm listening to Friends on Mushrooms 2 right now on Spotify. I've actually heard the track Savant did, I've been really into Savant lately.

I don't know anything about Macs so I don't know what a trash can mac is, but sounds cool. Flash drives seem to be what's up.

I actually am still perfecting my live show, I don't want to be on stage just standing there and I don't. I started off triggering Ableton with the Launchpad. In addition to that I do vocals on some tracks live, I play guitar live, and I just got a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2. I don't consider myself a DJ, I'm not one. But it is really fun and I'm learning. Do you play shows? If so how do you play live?

The last one you reviewed is actually an earlier mix of the first with ought all of the chord progressions and note changes.

No worries:)

I do not play shows. I like my controlled environments in which I can perfect ever detail:)

I consider my plugins DJ's. I just tell them what kind of DJ's to be. lol

Oh really? It sounded so much different. I actually thought it was great, some of the sounds you used in that last one were really full and unique, you should remix it.

That's cool, I love sitting with my headphones on for hours producing but I have to play shows. I feel weird when too much time has gone by without performing live. There are so many ways to perform electronic music, you should give it a try. And shows are pretty much the only way musicians get paid these days.
