Hi Jim - I appreciate your review of "Carefree Calypso" - it's good to be recognized, and after listening to "Invasion of Mayberry", I'm definitely flattered. "Mayberry" is one of the most creative tracks I can recall listening to, so many different styles woven together seamlessly that on paper I wouldn't even believe it could be done - until I heard it. I'd sure like to hear what instrumental track came in first, cuz' for my money - it doesn't get much better than what you composed...thanks again.

Thanks Nathaniel. I'm embarrassed, but that's just me. Your note from a ways back - struck a chord with lots of people - including me, and I can't tell you how many times I've looked at the "results" thinking maybe there was some kind of mistake! My songs weren't there...The first three years I subscribed to Broadjam, I had a total of ZERO tracks selected. What kind of an idiot would keep spending the time and money to keep trying? THIS kind of idiot...eventually some good things started to happen, and it just fed that hunger that I know you have, and I have - to just make an honest living DOING THIS.
Despite the successes, we still have a LONG, LONG way to go because - as you know - every day you've got to 'start over' and prove your work is better than the next 200 cuts the provider will listen to. Speaking of which - back into the lab...thanks for the note, Nate!

Indeed.

I had a moment of "wtf" after dumping 2 grand into my best work across several websites. Honestly... I'm over it though.

Right now its just "Shut up and show off" mode. I know my value... I don't need to be wildly successful to realise it. As of now... I'm just grateful to be doing what I love and what I'm good at.

It pleases me greatly to see Broadjam's newsletter mentioning your success in the aftermath of that "Teensy" psychotic snap. lol

Things are actually really good over this way. I'm currently in talks with several Australian publishers, clients are rolling in now that the studio has been significantly upgraded, and I've never been happier to be back in the game.

But yes... Even with every big win... There's an even bigger one right around the corner that begs to be earned. You have to stay focused, preserver, and never give up.

This business isn't for the thin skinned... Much like the bar business:)

Keep at it... Maybe we'll meet each other in a studio and work on a J.J. Abrams film together at some point:)

Wouldn't that be sweet eh?

Regardless. Proud of you... We all are.

Thank you for that generous offer. WHAT kind of tools did you recently get for the studio? Talk tech! ...but anyway, your absolutely right about dealing with TODAY and the good things happening with your studio and your business. It's SO competitive out here and creating a "sound" that's yours (and yours alone) so imperative. Fill me in when you can regarding the studio and the tools you're working with, Nate - and thanks again for your kind words -

Nate, you're probably more into the gear than I - my setup with Pro Tools is pretty basic. I've spent time over the years working on 'SOUNDS' - from drums to brass to guitars, collecting and modifying, and these help my mixes sound decent-to-good. But only have a few xtra plug-ins Waves UltraMX, Multi-Rack and Sound grid. I take care to maximize signals at every step of the recording process - but that's about it. My sound modules are KORG, the sampled library East-West.

Author
Vi: 00110110

I have East-West as well. I love their platinum orchestra collection.

And yes... Getting big sound isn't just about mastering, its done in stages from the origins of sound design, into the mix, and beyond with the mastering.

If you can't get a mix to sound great without mastering, you're missing a step in the process, and should consider re-evaluating your approach.

Obviously you know better already:)

I like your modesty. Its a great quality to see in successful individuals and something I struggle with on occasion being I've spent half of my life being beaten down... These days I'm realising its not about proving something though, its just about doing good work.

Do you remix? How about adapt or arrange current beds?

Hi

I've done some remixing a ways back, but these days just focusing on writing and mixing my stuff - and then of course shopping it - not enough time in the day for that it seems. I also do quite a bit of critical listening - guys on my team send their work and I try to offer worthwhile feedback.

Team? Tell me about your team. What kind of goals do you and your team focus on these days.

Critical listening? Sounds like a great gig that not only connects you with other artists but could potentially help support your music submissions if you do it often enough. Who do you typically cater to?

Worthwhile feedback is something all of us need on occasion.

Not enough of it in this business to be honest.

Indeed. I try to visit every summer, and manage to just about every year...I lived in Madison in the late 80's and early 90's - undergrad at UW. Butch Vig was in my electronic music class, and drove a cab back then...played in a band called Spooner, too, until he moved on to slightly bigger things:) But there's so much more to the city than UWM, it's a thriving, creative, active and progressive place - truly unique place, that never disappoints. I envy you, as places to live go...

Hello Tom. thanks again for the kind words. As regards "Gauge" magazine - has issue #1 been compiled? Or is 'magazine' more akin to a "news magazine' style or live production? I'm curious because I'd like to have a look.

I'm in Chicago, and started making house records with DJ Intl. and Chicago Trax back in the day. "Hey Rocky" (by Boris Badenough a/k/a me), "Move" and "House Ain't Givin' Up" were all Billboard-charting (Dance) records. We've evolved into a music production company, creating music for TV/Cinema now, with dozens of placements in all manner of programming/content worldwide.
I also DJ'd/VJ'd at Cabaret/Smart Bar and Berlin many, many years ago, AND edited music vids for the likes of Nine Inch Nails ("Down in It" and "Head Like a Hole"), Public Enemy ("Night Train"), Sound Garden ("Jesus Christ Pose" and "Rusty Cage"), Ministry ("Burning Inside")...OK, I've blabbed it all out - in short I've been involved with, and made a living from, the Chicago entertainment community for the last 30 years, give or take. From 1994 - 2011 when she retired the show, I was a post production specialist at Harpo Productions, working on The Oprah Winfrey Show...Hey, it was a great gig!

There are certainly interesting stories from all these places and experiences, that might make for interesting reading to your audience/subscribers. Let me know if there's any consideration given to freelance writers, to contribute pertinent stories to "Gauge".

sorry if i seem unfair.....it's always hard to know what people are trying to do....so it impossible to know whether they are succeeding at what they set out to do. i review tunes by assuming they are trying to break in to the electronic market.....and with ambient that usually means film/tv ...tho there are other possibilities there......but i think across the board electronic music is going to be judged on sounds.....and usually cutting edge sounds...and many musicians in this field do not rely on vst's....you are right....and there is often a retro feel...a different era.....but still the sound quality is always pristine in the most successful instances.....that's my main problem w/ this tune......i hope you take it in the spirit of constructive and honest criticism it's given....and i think i gave you some 4's and 5's so i did see the merits of what you are doing.....

Rick, thank you for the feedback on those tunes...PLEASE chime in on anything those 'million-dollar' ears hear, because after putting some 'drop' (lower freq punch) on the kicks in BOTH 'uber tow' and 'locken frau', it's brought the WHOLE bottom end into alignment with the rest of the track - THANK YOU!

You know how you land at the BJ site and there's a bunch of photos of artists who are charting? Today I see Hans' photo there for "electronic music"...now I didn't slip the guys at BJ any bribes, but I'm wondering if you see it too? Sometimes I wonder just how "personalized" their promotions get - and if their bank of computers are smart enough to stroke members into thinking what they want us to think....this might sound crazy and paranoid, but if you DO see Hans' photo on the home page, please let me know. Thank you.

I'll have a new round of listings I've submitted Sankey music to next week. It's been a very busy musical week, shopping your, my, Etric's and Juju Child's (blues artist). BTW, have you recently sent me a photo of your band? Pls. let me know, as I get confused in my old age sometimes...a group from the "Bay Area" sent me a photo from their LIVE gig, and the drummer looked alot like YOU, but I'm just not sure...thanks.

Last but not least, I have embarked on an accelerated tutorial of Cubase. The reason I may not have sounded enthusiastic about collaborating with you via Cubase when you suggested it was pure embarrassment. There is NO way I know this sequencer anywhere near as well as you do, so I'm trying to pick it up quick, and want to take you up on your suggestion - but only when I'm ready.

OK, have a good Friday and weekend, and I'll speak with ya soon.

Rick:

There's an angel in my funk? Always loved the title of that track...Hey, I finally got around to doing some listening, and my first listen was to "ambient 4 2 26 10", second one was "dnc 4 9 19". I always wondered if there was some sort of 'secret code' to the numeric titles, but by jove I think I've figured it out! Basically you are titling by date of completion? Or date of posting at BJ? In either event, it doesn't seem to be nearly as exotic or scientifically mysterious as I first thought.....

Anyway, on to the music. The "ambient 4 2 26" track is one I've got, and have already fed back - I think - because I recognize that incredible horn solo, the one I've always raved about. But this track is SO COOL, with the outstanding production, memorable melodies, and fucking GRRREeat horn samples/solos, that not much more needs to be said. I wouldn't classify the song as "ambient" myself. There are breakdowns within
the track that have ambient characteristics, but the track is dominated by a solid R&B/hip-hop groove, and the breaks serve to provide dynamic 'markers', if you will. One thing you KNOW you're going to get witha Rick

Sankey track is ear candy. Anyone who appreciates great sounds, clever production, and pristine recordings is going to be rewarded every time. I'm honestly impressed by how prolific a writer you are, Rick, and you set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality output.

The 'dnc 4 9 19' track is different. it starts out with that driving industrial beat accompanies by a sort of mid-eastern riff, with the characteristic Sankey production - it's definitely music to the listeners ears, and that instrument playing the mid-east main melody is right on the money. I'm not sure exactly what category to put this tune, but it's fun to listen to, it moves - no boring repitition, and offers up that ear candy I've referred to...can't think of much I'd change. Good work.

I've sort of come out from under my rock, and the temperature in Chicago hit 85 degrees today! Summer is here, and I'm heading out onto the balcony to grill steaks tonite. mmmm. grilled cow.....
Anyway, hope you and Tina are well, and that the Oakland air is cool and breezy. I'm definitely turning up the volume of shopping now that the show is history, and again appreciate your patience with my lacadaisical response time.

glad the weather is breaking back there....raining again today...so weird.
glad u like dnc 4 9.29.....yea the titles represent dates of either when the idea started or when the project is due for some submission. i'm holding off on even working titles because the song can evolve right out of that title, kinda like this one evolve from a dance tune to whatever it is now. i realize it will be hard to find a home for this tune let alone find a defining genre. how are your connections to turkish tv and film? i hope to shoot ya an email in the next day or two and let ya know what i'm up to....till then i like my steak black on the out side and just a little warm on the inside....1/2 lb of london broil is my favorite and one of the cheaper cuts.

Your a monster, Rick. Your ability to just kick out SO much music is incredible. And today you seemed to have given birth to a couple of guitar-oriented pieces in "tu case trem" and "SNG FRM KCK" - I know I've messed up that title, but they are the top two tracks in your songlist. At any rate, "SNG FRM KCK" has a wonderful guitar hook, to me stronger than 'tucase trem', but both are fun to listen to. I've got more feedback regarding arrangement, and it seems as it "SNG FRM KCK" is a bit more developed than "TUCASE", but both have super-duper potential. AGain, I'm amazed (and slightly jealous) at your prodigous productivity. I"m going to get there, as soon as I get DONE with this fricking job, and have the TIME.

But CUDOS on the charting, as well as the new tracks. I'll provide some real feedback tomorrow, but it's mostly just arrangement that I hear needing some help, and in the case of "TUCASE TREM", it sounds as if you could use another section to balance it out...until manana...DA/HANS

Don't mean to be tooting my horn too loudly, since there is plenty of room for improvement (especially after listening to your music), but I've been at this for quite a while. In fact Sankey, the fellow you've exchanged a few comments with, is one of the artists I've signed to my company and I just signed him and another artist to a sweet music library production deal with APM, for worldwide distribution of ten of his songs...OK, I feel like a commercial at this point, but if you are at all looking for broadcast exposure of your music, and the subsequent residuals that accompany it - write back - I'd like to talk more about it with you!

BTW, I went to school in Madison, it is still one of my favorite places on planet Earth.

Thank you for your review of my song "Love & Sweat". Your comments on the bass driving mix make sense. It was my preference to use that as a driving element, and it's been generally very well-received. One always takes a chance when putting any one thing other than vocals up front in the mix :). I will take some time to listen to your music over the next couple days. If you are inclined to listen to anything else I have done, you may find it quite different from the song you reviewed as I don't typically write electronic music :)--I just like it. Thanks again!
