Chris Palmer has been deeply involved in the development of the dance music industry in South Africa. Having had a hand in just about every dance compilation released in the country, he brings a wealth of music knowledge to his sets. His style is described as progressive, dark and edgy with a hint of funky bass and atmospheric ambience. Chris has been producing dance music for many years now and has had a top-ten single on national radio with Atomique by Chromagene. He’s also been nominated for a South African Music Award and climbed the UK Club Charts with a remix for Bluescreen named Ladybird.

Biography

Chris has been involved in the development of the dance music industry in South Africa over the last 10 years. Having had a hand in just about every dance compilation released in the country, from Perfecto, Kiss FM and Bump to all of the House Afrika releases. Working as the editor and chief writer for Music Maker Magazine, Chris has seen the magazine grow from 64 to 108 pages, as well as doubling the readership in 2 years. Music Maker is currently archiving all of their material at Music Industry Online. Chris worked at CSR Studios in Sandton for eight years, where he gained most of his industry experience. The studio has been responsible for recordings such as “Substitute” by Clout, worked on the Lion King 3 and Fantasia 2, as well as albums for the likes of Johnny Clegg, Brenda Fassie, Soweto String Quartet, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, TKZee and Tima Reece. Chris’s own studio, Layered, is responsible for mastering about 50% of all South African CD releases.

Chris has been producing his own music for the last 7 years, having had a top ten hit on SA’s national radio station, 5FM, with “Atomique” as well as being nominated for South African Music Award for “To the light”. Chris DJ’s regularly at clubs in Johannesburg and tours the rest of South Africa every couple of months. He’s played alongside DJ’s like Nick Warren, Lee Burridge and Gary D, as well as South African DJ’s like Dizzy, Manuel and Speedy. Sponsored by Gemini and Red Bull, Chris runs the Red Bull Homegrooves events’, giving up-and-coming DJ’s the chance to play to an up-for-it crowd. He was also involved in the Red Bull Music Academy in Cape Town in November 2003. Chris helped to plan the event and create a space that none of the participants would easily forget, as well as lecturing on mastering. Chris’s remix of Arno Carstens’ “The Magic of Home” was recently released in Germany through Sony Music and his label, Layered, is distributed through EMI. Chris has just completed his first international gig. He played in Frankfurt, alongside Christian Floeck of Genepool (Naked Music Representative, Germany). Chris has just released an album worldwide called “Chris Palmer featuring Michael Allen” through a Californian record company, Inner Dream Records (www.innerdreamrecords.com).
