The ’09 6-Pack Contest Is On!

Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.

As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.

You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.

As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!

So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.

The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.

Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

If I can pry the keyboard out of her hands tonight after the kids are in bed and I’m done with today’s re-mix I might actually be able to review stuff…and earn credits so I can join in the comments on the harsh ratings…:)

    John:

The best part is when you take a look at the top ten on BJ “period.”

Good work, typically… But you have to ask yourself.

“How the heck did this guy get by with so many 5 outa 5 when I’m getting lubed from behind as often as I do?”

If you nail the BJ world top 10… You’re doing something right… But seriously? You didn’t get a bad review on that at least once?

In the last week alone I’ve heard a lot of material with more substance and polish than a few of the tracks I’ve seen in a lot of the top tens. (Some of my lesser work included.)

Yet.. Often those great works won’t see the light of day over some gun ho producer with a mini mob account trying to get his single review on a track he poured his soul into (and it still smells like $#!@.)

Yeah… Its rolling a dice when you open a review these days. I’ve learned that whining doesn’t work (but i still do it), blasting your reviewer isn’t going to enlighten them (but I still try), and calling foul on poor taste is about as useful as being the tallest midget in the world… (It just isn’t.)

Damn Murphy… I got your law right here!

    Hank:

Great work on your new track!!! I like it!!! Great hook and wonderfully polished!!!

    Cheers:)

  • John Mansfield's comment is:

That’s what kills me about negative reviews – they often come from those with pretty poor music and production quality themselves, or no music at all on their profile!

I must say we have had some very nice reviews as well, with constructive, usable feedback, so I guess it’s not all bad. I’ve also heard some really great music on Broadjam! Lots of talented people out there.

As for suggestions, Roy, one I’d like to see is a Broadjam player that can be embedded right into my personal web page, versus the pop up player (as SoundClick offers). Theirs can also be inserted into MySpace as well by plugging in their HTML code. I think it would add something to my site to have the player built right in, and being able to use it on MySpace would allow me to accumulate all my song plays through Broadjam for tracking. Maybe even enable it to autostart when someone visits the page it is on such as MySpace does? With the ability to randomly choose which song plays each time? OK, I’ll stop now!

    Cheers…

    Ian:

    I wouldn’t worry about it…

If some one has the balls to burn you in a review… Then they should really have the integrity to stand by their opinion. Public or otherwise…

Lesson number one in Bar management.

Don’t say something you don’t mean, leave no room for interpretation, and stand by your opinion. You’re only as good as your word, and you’re only respected when you follow through with your convictions with some level of integrity while you’re doing it.

I think that can be applied to anything in life.

    Cheers:)

LOL Pro,….I got about 3 of them in the last couple of weeks..
they were from 3 different reviewers…(nubees)…they come in with guns blazing at first….takes ‘em a while to realise they aint makin’ many friends…lol…..and when you have a listen to Their stuff….its usualy riddled with the same problems they try to pin on your stuff….lol. Dont know if you remember….but I tried to start a Funny Reviews-comp on the blog last year….and posted up one of mine….Bobby put up one of His….lol….but most were concerned about it incase we hurt the reviewers feelings…should He/She happen to look at the 6 pack blog….LMAO….

    June 15th…

Got a review in on “Nothing like you imagine (instrumental) ” dismorning… Guy literally praises me for how “sick” the track is… Then he gives me a 3 outa 5 in the over all because “it takes a while to get into the track.”

    WTF is that?

    Its “sick” but “not really?”

(Cocks head to side while raising eyebrow.)

Then the guy has the nerve to start asking me for trade secrets after leaving a bi-polar review.

(slaps himself in the head with a deep sigh.)

OK ……. Did IQ’s just drop sharply lately? I mean… If you like something, you’re gonna rave about it, and then you’re gonna ask me how I did that… Shouldn’t you score it more highly?

    …..
    ….
    …
    ..
    .

    Ok… Word to the wise.

Unless you’re kissing my ass with decent scores, don’t ask me for trade secrets.

Its OK to have an opinion… But try not to be Bi-Polar about it… It removes credibility.

In the words of the great and all mighty “Christian Bale” off of the Terminator Salvation set… “IT’S #$%@ing DISTRACTING!!!”

(Starts laughing while shaking head at silly reviewers, walks away, closes studio door behind him.)

    Hey 6-Packers

Jesse Spohn from the Broadjam staff here – looking forward to another great competition! Just wait, when the leaderboard goes up things will really start to heat up. The veteran 6-Packers can back me up on that.

One of the really cool things about last year in the 6-Pack blog was when people would point out great tunes they found in the review process – I’d like to encourage that again this year. I’ve been building up several of my Broadjam playlists lately, so I want you all to help me out with that. If you find something you like in the 6-Pack reviews let us know in the blog. Most recently I’ve been bumping my Pop-Alternative playlist – check that out here and copy it if you like:

    7:30 am Saturday

Managed to really shape up those songs I started working on… Took a break and got even more carried away with reviews, but I’m glad being I’ve discovered a lot of great stuff just reviewing Random Genres.

Its really refreshing actually. I was able to really flex my production noodle and have been receiving “thank you” letters all morning.

I handed out a couple 5′s… but they were all well earned in my mind… So its been a win/win morning so to say.

Now if I could just sleep.

Every time I stop drinking this happens. Damn Insomnia…

    Cheers:)

    Madison, saturday 1:45 am.

After a comfortable day resting on the couch and re-hydrating, I find those late night creative urges hitting me again after completing several reviews here on BJ.

It started out badly… Kept getting songs that just didn’t work for me. I felt like a real @$$ for a few of them, but was as nice about it as possible, and hope I don’t get any hate mail for it.

As I went on, I said screw it, and started reviewing random songs.

It really killed me… Why? Because the only 5s I handed out went to Country artist and some Rock. Electronica really sucks on average compared to country. That really sucks! My favorite genre has more ear fodder than “any” other genre it would seem.

Yes… I felt inspired to go to work after that chilling experience.

Adding a bass and strings to “Love My Bitch” and I’m going back to “Puzzle” to slow down those drums and keep the feel of the song much slower in nature.

Casual night sipping coffee in the old project studio, my new drink of choice this weekend.

    Cheers:)
