Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.
As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.
You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.
As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!
So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.
The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.
Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

And Ian, you might consider yourself a dinosaur and I might be a purist, in the end only time will tell what prevails.
Just think what Bach would say if he heard any music written and performed after the 19th century.
Music has developed into what it is today. People like you and me participate in the further development of music.
There are many facets to music and no one likes all of it. Embrace the diversity.
They can create software that sounds like guitars going through stacks of Marshalls but they forgot to build in the vibration coming from the speaker membranes.
Nov 24, 2009/1:50 pmWell said Nils! Especially that last part is something to keep in mind. Thanks and you are very level headed!
Nov 24, 2009/1:45 pmAt first I was ummm…then I thought aahhhh…but finally I settled on iieeekkk. And I hit the brakes.
I appreciate all your opinions. That’s why I read the blog. Do I agree with everything posted here? No. It’s a great forum and one of the best features is that people can speak their minds.
I appreciate all your music and songs. That’s why I participate in the contest and review entries. Do I like all of them? No. But it’s a great way to get to know people and listen to their heart and soul.
I am not a mediator like Bruce or Peter. But I consider myself level-headed with a good portion of common sense. This competition has a lot of grey areas. The challenges are not all foolproof. If that is what people are looking for we should start seeing challenges like “write and record a male vocal country song – no instrumentals allowed” or “write and record a classical sonata – must include a cello in the instrumentation”. No thanks. That would get boring after a while. The fact that we are all able to participate as ourselves playing our favorite genres and what we are good at makes it interesting. It makes the judging more difficult but also a lot more satisfying.
I mentioned this before, how do you compare three pieces for example electronica, country and hard rock? The elements that make up the music have different importance. While melody and harmony are a lot stronger in country music, hard rock relies a lot more on the beat and rhythm. Electronica adds a new element of sound to the equasion. Everyone here judges subjectively, one puts more emphasis on structure and composition while someone else is moved emotionally by a piece and yet another one can’t stand yodelling (don’t hate now…).
While we do this we learn and change. We make friends and connections. We sometimes listen to music we would never listen to. And yet it does something to us. It’s about the music. Music is a universal language and we are all fluent in it.
Take care, Nils
Nov 24, 2009/1:35 pmHi Felice..Good to see you! Yes Beverly dated Roy briefly, really they were just friends, still she was enraptured by him and held some high hopes. She told me he used to hum and whistle all the time when they went out and she thought it was because he was happy to be in her company but really it was just him remembering a new song he had just heard. Music was his life and it was hard for her to compete, still she has fond memories of those days…Glad she had a calming effect, sometimes she can rattle your nerves….Anyway yes quite a bumpy ride recently but things shift and really what an amazing musical crew of so many diverse natures and abilities…So much talent and I love the individuality that is present…My darling Ian you are not a dinosaur at all!You are a modern day musical hero, to me anyway, I know how you were meaning though…I like your can ideas for the future, that would be great…! xox Pen
Nov 24, 2009/1:09 pmHey Beverly, you looked great on that video. Loved your outfit and accessories. I didn’t know you dated Roy…..? Well, that is something. He’s got a knack for discovering talent. You can tell how dedicated he is when you see in notifications how intense he gets when he listens to so many songs from new artists or something really peaks his interest. You too must have had a blast. And thanks Bev for commenting on the blog. It really has been heated up in the last few day. It’s been like watching two great heavy weights go at it. Pro and Johnny really went at it on lyrics vs instrumentals etal. But thanks to people like you and our wise sage Sean, I mean, Peter for being the voices of reason and cooling things down. I guess eveyone’s nerves are very edgy now and instead of being busy uploading and reviewing the song entries they are at each other’s throats now that it is coming to and end. Well, it’s good to vent but remember we are here in this venue to participate in a musical adventure and share our inner talents not to tear each other down. So just enjoy the process and “what ever will be will be” as that old song goes. I wish you all the best and I am glad to have been a part of this journey.
Nov 24, 2009/12:06 pmMy Friends here on Bjam….they managed to talk me round last year…how unselfish was that…?….and about half way through the 6pack comp….I crossed over from
HD recording to DAW….then happily was placed 3rd in the 6th Can…and 6th overall….and received some amazing prizes….all kindsa goodies….which I had to learn
to use….not having seen any of it before.
My point is….I think….?…..I do feel that… slowly but surely ..being swept aside year by year….the computer is taking over ….and its true…it is
taking over…..and thats the way it is ! so we ‘ole Dinosaurs will have to accept….cause theres nothing can be done….the Technology will carry Wo/Man forward
into the future…..and wherever Wo/Man finds themselves in the Universe in 2625……they’ll be listening to Music !!! and thats what the ‘ole Dinosaurs will be
able to console themselves with….. they played their part in starting the whole thing…..and making Music an indelible part of Human Existence.
I Embrace All You New Music Makers……even though it causes my old bones to shudder….its just the way I’ve been Programned…..but I’m free from most of that now
and I’ll do my best to keep up……and I Trust you All to carry the Music Forward.
Dear Boss Roy,
The only way I can think of that you could help Delay the Demise of the Dinosaur….and it would only be a delay……would be to open another Section/room in Broadjam
to cater for Musical Instrument Players…..that way….stuff in there would be comparing like with like…..or if thats too much……a can in the next 6pack for
Instrument players only….although we would have to allow for Sample/loop/midi…Drums…..cause not everyone has a drum kit lying around….but all other parts are playable
…dont have to have a bass guitar….can use keys for bass….that kind of thing…..that way everyone would have to Play something……going by whats been said…
that in itself would be a challenge…..like the challenge us ‘ole Dinosaurs face every day with the onslaught of computer generated music.
And those of us who want to take part in the ever changing face of music can jump into the affray with everyone else if they wish…..only wouldn’t have the same grounds
for argument.
For my own part….I’ve learned to use a sample here…a sample there…..everywhere a S S S….lol…anyways …I try to incorporate everything I’ve learned…mostly
use synth samples to add some atmosphere or to thicken up and Play my Guitars,Bass and Keys…as often as possible.
I believe most of us players think along similar lines….although there are still some purists out there….the majority of us are trying to adapt our skills into the
Nov 24, 2009/12:02 pmnew environment.
Hi All,
wow…..I turn my back for a few days ….and have to read a raft of Blogmania……and I hope I dont add fuel to the fire by saying..
This is what I think…..honestly !
I increasingly feel like a Dinosaur…….a Dinosaur in the field of Music….a Proud Dinosaur….because I taught myself….among other things….to play the guitar
and write songs and Instrumentals. I believe All Instrument Players have this “I’m a real player ” thing goin’ on….Like a badge of honour…. and I can see how
this can get up a lot of peoples noses….(sorry for using this next bit)….what JonnyUK is on about…(not at Nathaniel personaly)….but to the music world in
general…..He’s venting His frustration from the point of view of an Instrument Player…..who’s up against the hard fact that…..He is a Dinosaur too…and its
hard to accept… that time is running out for us Dinosaurs.
Maybe not this decade…..but some time in the future…..there’ll be no Dinosaurs left….no Instruments….save a few peeps with collections…..and no Instrument
Players to play……But…..That Spaceman/Woman standing in the middle of a Ginormous oil field on Mars……will be listening to Music on His ipod…..maybe even….
listening to All of US !!!…..and the only way that can happen is if the New Generation of Music Producers carry on Loving Music.
This whole thing (modern Music)started 50 0r 60 years ago….and up until pretty recently it was all done by playing yer chosen instrument/s….but now…now is the
time that its all but changed……in the words of the most famous Bob….You’d better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone….for the times they are a changin’
My Friends here on Bjam….they managed to talk me round last year…how unselfish was that…?….and about half way through the 6pack comp….I crossed over from

Bruce: While it’s fresh on my mind, just wanted to thank you for opening the Christmas Can and compiling such wonderful work from our fellow musician citizens. I look forward to playing the whole collection during this holiday season.
Nov 24, 2009/9:50 amLOL David! Good to see you and hope the stress levels drop soon, intense here too. Love you xox Off to town Peter You much more handsome than Sean…Hope he (SC) doesn’t read the blog, in the mornin! LOL
Nov 24, 2009/9:39 amGod, how I love the smell of Napalm in the morning. . . just diving into my first pot of coffee for the day and catching up on the blog.
So, Pro, you think of me as a father. I will take that as a serious compliment, especially when you rank me up there with Roy.
There are things I said to both you and J’UK in private and I meant every word. You both belong here. I just find it impossible to sit back and watch the two of you bash each other, regardless of who starts it. It’s simply harmful and unnecessary.
I can’t imagine my life without its soundtrack. From earliest childhood, music has always been in the background or in my imagination.
From classical music to jazz trios to movie soundtracks, how boring life would be without music and the great composers who score life’s emotions in notes and melody.
Song Contests are never fair or equitable because how does one truly compete against another artist when we should all be encouraging each other, sharing our joy for the craft of music, the craft of lyric, the craft of the producer, the player, the instrumentalist, the writer and most important of all: the almighty listener.
BroadJam is not the perfect forum. It can’t be because it is made up of us – we are B’Jam. We are what constitutes its fabric and fiber. We are the 7th Can, we are the Six Pack, we are the musician citizens and Roy is the good mayor.
I, for one, will participate again in the six pack. Partly to support this venue, partly because I am somewhat competitive and mostly because there is so much to discover: about you, about me and the world of music around us.
And, Sean Connery looks like me – except he’s older. Time for another cup of coffee.
Nov 24, 2009/9:33 amSorry guys, was in a foul mood last night and that whole “instrumentals aren’t songs” debate is entirely bullshit to me. So I went off. Lots of stress lately.
Pro, never lost the respect as a musician…just in how you handled something at one time. That was forgiven a long time ago.
Time to go suck on a crapcycle.
Later mates…
Nov 24, 2009/9:31 amYes PT, Stein has a beautiful soul you can hear it in his song “Life” and it seems to me he looks out at the world through very seeing eyes…Good to know that Stein is there with his many musical gifts and calming presence…
Nov 24, 2009/8:33 amPretty Marie
Ohhhh woman.
Welcome… welcome indeed,
Nov 24, 2009/6:14 amOh crap… you’re saying she did the track!!!
LOL
(puts scotch down.)
What was the name of the track?
Screw it…
Play all.
Nov 24, 2009/6:03 amBruce… saw that right after it was posted. LOL
Luckily… I was thoughtful enough to apologize shortly after conceding my poor spelling.
I’m sure she’ll forgive me.
