Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.
As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.
You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.
As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!
So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.
The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.
Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

Wow… what a read!!
As with anything… you are going to have a difference of opinion on rules and how they are interpreted… The most disturbing thing I read here was the use of Karaoke tracks in the cover can… I struggle just to get a listenable mix and if folks are using pre-fab pro backing music of course they are gonna get the votes for a more palatable listen… Oh well, we all get what we deserve I guess…
I must say though: Broadjam has some really great artists and I am proud to be a part of the six pack and this community.
I entered this contest cause my business is down due to the economy and I had more spare time than usual. I have heard some great songs while reviewing and feel I have made some connections that I value…and if nothing else I forced some folks to listen to at least a minute of my “Trash”
Happy Thanksgiving to All

Great for band exposure too…
Nov 22, 2009/4:58 amActually… a forum would work better.
Nov 22, 2009/4:24 amJust wrapped can 3…
Is that Visconti with all the epic guitar? Gotta be with points like that.
That was fun… wish there was more.
Now to take on 1 and 4.
2 is getting the hard snub from me I think though… I just cant handle that can most days. LOL Gragnat becomes restless and begins using excessive amounts of TP for his snout.
Anyone else wrap any reviews for the cans yet?
Has some one compiled a list of their most enjoyed and unexpected surprises this year?
Reviews are a good ay to clean the house. Just pop in every 3 minutes or so… “Click click.” Good distraction. Only problem is a lot of the great tracks out there seem to be unlocatable through metadata at times.
Roy… Think you can start a found and lost blog? Je Je…
“Found this lost song… need artist to claim it.” and then post the anonymous review link? I’ve got a list of 20 or so lost songs that need to be purchased.
Nov 22, 2009/4:22 amwell, with the points I´ve learned to not take them seriously, I sometimes get a few points, now for example I have quite a few, but always the day after or smth I´m back to 0, the cool thing though is this year I have written 5 songs as result of this competition,
Love (for love section), Believe again (for rarefied hight), Life (for instrumental and two time), 123-12 (for rarefied and instrumental) and then two “covers” of sunshine, that 6 I guess. So thats worth the money for me.
I think the voting usually reflects very well in the end the better from the good, to finish in top 20 is excellent work. I however do respect a bit more the people who have tried to write songs specificly for the competition, that would be all those with cover songs for example cause thats what makes this competition different from others, you do have to make new stuff to win
. The playing field is usually not even, some have professional stuff, others more amateur, but once in awhile a real gem comes forward and thats something that makes this whole thing worth while. I have looked at the stuff I made 2 years ago when I was starting out, and I compare it to what I´m doing now and I have to say that comparing me to the excellent professionals here that work in this world of music has helped me very much, and in the end thats why I enter I think. I go play classical music, concerts and stuff like that and then come home and think about this game here and start writing, I don´t do that as often when the 6pack isn´t on. The dream situation would be with all 6 events more specific and you would have to write more… but then broadjam would not make any money with less ppl taking part.
Ranting off…..
Nov 21, 2009/3:07 pmHi Stacy! Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Great meeting you here and hearing your wonderful music!
Nov 21, 2009/2:28 pmAnd, a Happy Thanksgiving to you Stacy, thank you for saying so.
Nils, Stein, Morgen and all our fellow peer reviewers: Can 6 by far has seen the most flagrant abuse in this competition.
It will be most interesting watching the board as the number of submissions alone may place one or more of us in the top twenty for that category.
But, it will take another 5 days to see just how many folks are trying to play the odds game. I personally have heard a handful of entries from the seventh can that could easily place two or more of their individual submissions in the top twenty and thereby eliminate us bottom feeders.
As Nils suggested, the inappropriate button has true validity in this can. Please use it fairly and watch for some trick endings if you use the minute timer rule.
Nov 21, 2009/2:09 pmHey Guys,

Nov 21, 2009/1:46 pmJust wanted to drop in and say that I enjoyed chatting with you all on the blog. I’ve heard some amazing stuff and met some amazing people. If any of you are on facebook please connect…look for Stacy Davis Swinford.
Hope you all have a great rest of the week and a Happy Turkey day if I don’t talk to ya before.
Stacy
Hey Nils, Thanks for answering..The review thing is still a bit confusing because the same few people have had thousands of votes for months now, so that says to me that they have had a head start at the very least because they entered first.
But in any event there must be a reason that the same 2 people win every year so my questions are probably moot, because it looks as if they are at the top again.
Congrats to all the winners no matter what!
Morgen
Nov 21, 2009/1:33 pmMorgen, about your other questions:
1) everyone can submit as many songs as they want to as many challenges as they want. None of this year’s challenges call for a specific genre, anyone can incorporate the requested task into their songwriting.
2) Rankings are based on averages. Songs that have been submitted months ago and had x number of reviews haven’t been up for review for a while and won’t be until the last songs that were submitted this week have received the same number of reviews.
3) When your song hasn’t had many reviews changes to the average with just one vote can be huge. For example, the first vote your song receives is a three. Your average is three, you will probably be in first place in the challenge. The next vote you receive is a one, all of a sudden your average is a two and your song plunged hundreds of ranks.
Hope this helps. Nils
Nov 21, 2009/1:26 pmStein & Morgen, we’ve had the discussion about can 6 several times either because of questions or frustrations when reviewing. You are both correct in your assessment that the rules state two or more time signature changes and not two or more tempo changes. Rubato passages or ritardandos are not time sig changes. Half time is usually not a time sig change. There are plenty of good examples of the challenge out there that Jim Ferrie had listed a few posts back.
Don’t be afraid to use the inappropriate check box but make sure you listen to the full song before you do.
Nils
Nov 21, 2009/1:14 pmStein Thor, thnks for posting that..You are correct in your interpretation of can 6..ditto instrumental..that one is part of my point about people entering EVERY can despite their style. Also, some people are using karaoke tracks for the cover can..and some of them are in top 20..not cool
Nov 21, 2009/12:40 pmPeter, your comments were so beautifully expressed. I know the feeling you are having now that the submissions are over. It was not just about the music but the wonderful friendships that ensued from this crazy ride. Yes, it kept us all pretty busy for months and a little empty now that it’s coming to an end. However, the richness of the experience will always be there and hopefully the friendships too. I will always cherish our “Georgia” for it’s spontaneity you brought out in me and all the fantastic music that was born out of this contest. Wishing everybody the best, Felice
Nov 21, 2009/12:38 pmPlease excuse my typos..I’m holding a baby! lol
Nov 21, 2009/12:34 pmHi all..I am thoroughly confised abot the 6 pack contest..here’s the question.
1st – it looks like most people submitted songs to EVERY challenge weather it was their genre/style or not..Was that the point of the contest?
2nd – If the winners are based on an accumulative score, then the people who entered the contest toward the end, stand no reasonable chance of winning right compared to those who entered at the begining.
3rd- I was briefly at the number 10 spot only to find that an HOUR later, I was bumped down to 246th (where I started) and the person previously in 10th place was right back where they were. How is is possible that THAT many people voted in such a short period of time?
I have found that Broadjam’s contests usually are organized oddly, but this is really weird. Am I just stupid? Can someone clear this up for me?
Thanks all!
