Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.
As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.
You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.
As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!
So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.
The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.
Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

Have a Great Gig Pete !!!
Yeah….I agree with Y’All (am I alowd to say that…Y’All..?) Anyhooooo……if everyone was grown up about this…we would’nt have to suffer all that S***…..I’ve really enjoyed Colaborating for the first time this year…and only entered two that I wrote… once each….
But yeah…if we want to tighten things up a bit more…we should not be able to vote on a colaboration we were involved in….But just realised….That would cut down either the amount of votes a song may have received…and / or the amount of colaboration that takes place…..oh….me brain hurts….
I cant work that out myself…lol
Hey…qick diversion…I found a great site today called
Last.FM …its a real handy place to hear something you need to hear…lol…I mean….when we are asked in the 6pack to do a cover of some songs….or a Broadjam opportunity …Film needs music similar to..bla bla…..and you have’nt got a clue ie: dont remember ever hearing it……well this is a good place to look…or listen even.
OK…as you were….

There, I said it again.
Nov 20, 2009/2:08 pmPeter,
If your best song is a love song, it should go in can one and can two. If it’s an instrumental, can one and can three. Any other contest in the world that has categories allows this.
If the foo shits, wear it! (or in this case, if the song fits, share it!)

The multiple slight variations are a pain in the ass, that’s for sure. “lite” mix, “pop” mix, “country” mix, give me a break. . .
especially when you hear them all in a row. The double entries by co-writers always get a 1 from me. That’s just wrong. If they are in different, but appropriate cans, they get what they earn, be it 1, 2 or 3.
If the foo shits, wear it!

Being my first year in the six pack, I have come to realize a level of etiquette that I will apply next time.
Even though some of my songs fit a number of categories, I will stick to one thematic can and live with my choice. Collaborations I will treat with the same respect. (I only made the second submission once this year.)
And, all the yahoos who entered songs into can six that clearly had no time change whatsoever, not even half time or a real retard. Even I knew better. Oh Well! Live and Learn!
Sure have enjoyed the six pack both as a writer/performer and as a listener. I have even learned to use the inappropriate button on a couple of occasions.
Later Guys. I actually have a GIG tonight.
Nov 20, 2009/1:52 pmTroy, Mags,
agreed, multiple songs are not scoring well in my book. I have participated on 5 other songs in this competition and I have not entered one of them myself. I just don’t believe in it. Just because I play guitar doesn’t mean I can take the points for your composition/arrangement/production etc and first of all your idea.
Interesting point about reviewing your own collaborations, Troy. Maybe that is something that should be changed next year. Although you need to rely on “honest” metadata on the songs. And the song I planned to collaborate on with everyone here would never be reviewed…darn it!

Nov 20, 2009/1:09 pmYeah Mags,
It definitely gets on my nerves to have the same song come up twice in a review session, because inevitably you have to vote and one is going to get a 2 even if I thought it may not have deserved it. It’s happened a few times. You touched on another thing, if you colab with some one and you both put the song into the can you get to actually vote on your own work and vice versa. That kind of defeats the purpose of the having the inability to review your own song! And we all know that when that happens all artists involved do indeed vote for their own work. That’s something that should be look at for the next six pack. Have the review mechanism check the “writers/performers” field in the song details. Then a given song could not be reviewed by any artists involved.

Nov 20, 2009/12:41 pmHey Peter, had to put my sunglasses on for that wild ride in “Sunshine”. You’re so innovative:)
Nov 20, 2009/12:24 pmhey troy .. every year this type of thing happens.. last year their was a song that someone entered like 5 times in every single can.. it was a drag needless to say the person did not get any points from that…..and every year a few people dump their entire catalouge in every can so you had to hear 60 songs over and over.. some of times 4 different versions of the same song in the same can ..it never works and it is alway hard for the reviewer .. i guess they dont think about that caught up in the moment… i think anything over 20 or so songs is excessive and unnecessary .. if your songs are great just enter the top of the top and hope people love them..
but sometimes their are two or three co-writers all entering the same song..
Nov 20, 2009/12:24 pmHi all,
Like the rest of you, I’ve been reviewing a lot in all the cans this past week. I’m finding a LOT of duplicate entries! Seems like quite a few artists have submitted the same versions of a song with only slight variations. What gives with that? Changing/adding one instrument or back up vocal to the same song version, in my mind does not make it a different take on the song. Could be a ploy to just have more songs in the can? Makes me wonder. I even had the same song, basically, come up in one review session. That’s kind of lame in my opinion. Just dropping a my 2 cents on my review experience this week.

Nov 20, 2009/12:01 pmYou’ll get that occasionally while entertaining the worlds I create…
Thank you.
Nov 20, 2009/11:45 amyeah, pretty cool Prot… it had strange effect on me in the beginning, I felt like I was falling….
Nov 20, 2009/10:55 amdamn, Peter is going way beyond the box on that one
, out of ether is the Georgia on my mind that is one of the best things I´ve heard here, cause it´s pretty damn raw.. no overproduction ttere
Nov 20, 2009/10:37 amall Peter… Although mine was fun too.
Nov 20, 2009/10:26 amjust heard a Georgia that is now on my mind, that voice is what I would have liked to have been born with…. damn what I could do with a voice like that bah….
thanks for nice comments ppl, love all your work, the phsycadelic sunshine song by Peter and probably Prot.. was wonderful.
Nov 20, 2009/10:14 amAnd… I think Visconti just blew my brains across the wall with an unholy epic guitar cruncher… Followed by the biggest orchestra I’ve heard all year (by another unknown artist.)
%$#@ing awesome people. Just awesome.
A much welcomed change.
They may have jammed the reviews with a lot of work… but in some cases… They saved the best for last.
I encourage everyone to get in there and experience some of this amazing work. You may have to push through a few rounds… but there are diamonds to be found here.
