Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.
As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.
You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.
As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!
So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.
The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.
Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

George Jones is taking some heat from nashville for his recent comments on today’s country music.
http://www.roughstock.com/blog/george-jones-hates-today-s-country-music
Kind of reminds me of what Tom Petty said when I attended a concert of his in Nashville a couple of years back. I’ll paraphrase it for you cause I didn’t write it down. He said:
“Got into Nashville today and the driver was listening to a local country station… I looked at him and asked What the f*#& is that Shit”… The crowd roared.
They both kinda have a point in that, for example, no one changed punk to grunge and still called it punk. Today’s country is not the country my dad knew and loved.

And the blog turned silent…let the music play on…play on…play on…

Nov 3, 2009/12:51 amHey, Bruce (son of Michigan): You were looking for Christmas songs which caused me to realize. . . I had sung hundreds but never wrote one. Thanks for the wake up call.
The recording features a borrowed guitar and a borrowed mic, and truth be told the inspiration is borrowed too, but maybe you will have room in your collection for this one. Happy Birthday, Jesus.

Thanks for the wake-up call.
Nov 2, 2009/11:36 pmJim, I gotcha now. I can’t do the change in tempo either. None of my examples are based on the length of a bar. They all use the absolute length of an 8th note as the common denominator. If I wanted to do tempo changes as well using a band would be easier than the DAW. If executed well your approach can really throw the listener for a loop, especially when you get back into the original tempo/time signature.
Sorry I can’t offer any help here.

Nov 1, 2009/10:27 pmNils,
It’s getting the tempo right that’s the difficult part. Your 4/4 tempo will be more bpm than your 3/4 tempo at effectively the same speed. I can’t do different tempos on a snap-to-grid basis on garageband or Ableton live (although, you can manually manipulate the tempo to speed up or slow down on Live as it plays which is why dj’s love it so much). I’d be interested to know how you do it in Logic, ‘coz otherwise, it’s playing it by ear and sight for the odd tempo section.
