Well, it’s time to get your songwriting chops lubed and prepare for the 5th Annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition.
As I mentioned, this is the fifth year of the 6-Pack. Liz Miller won the first two and Margaret McClure won the past two. I’m sure many of the veterans will be returning as I have been receiving steady inquiries about the starting date, challenges, etc. The first four categories are the annual primer (any song you have), a love song, an instrumental and a spiritual song. The last two will be announced later and I’m sure you’re going to love them!

I can’t wait to see what the veteran 6-Packers come up with and personally invite the newcomers to bring their “A” game. There’s not a songwriting competition out their quite like the Broadjam 6-Pack and you will be stretched way beyond your current capacity.
You will see lots of new technical changes coming to the 6-Pack as well. Many of these were a result of direct feedback and we threw in a few of our own. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding the 6-Pack or anything else we do for that matter. You can use this blog or send me a note directly. For some reason, I suspect you will have much to talk about.
As always, our sponsors have provided the contest with great prizes – take a look. They Include Sony, IK Multimedia, Line 6, Casio, Yamaha, ASCAP, and more!
So Get Lubed (Anything), Brew Some Luv (Love Songs), Shut Yer Yap (Instrumental) and get on that Rarified High (Spiritual) as we’re getting started.
The 2009 6-Pack is rockin’ and we’re off and running. Best of luck to everyone.
Sincerely,
Roy Elkins, Broadjam Founder and CEO

I confess… I broke some rules regarding 6 can.
Please feel free to mark inappropriate at any time.
But if you’re not good enough to catch it… Then I humbly invite you to try….
Any seasoned vet will know the difference… and if you have to ask… Then chances are. Well…
LOL
Nov 21, 2009/3:44 amgood discussion here,,, two things get on my nerves,
1. Hearing songs that really don´t fit the category, for example in 6th can, speeding up 4/4 temp is not time change I think. However maybe I misunderstood the category cause I made one song specially for it and it was mainly 3/4 2/4 change all the time with the chorus being in 6/4 or 3/8,/2/8 6/8 or alla breve chorus, man… maybe more time change is needed, I kinda thought rythm more complicated than the steady 4/4 or 3/4 that 95% of songs are in.
2. Hearing the non vocal master of a vocal song in the instrumental section, man, that pisses me off cause it´s well done mostly, played well, and sounds good, but is missing a lot and unfortunately there are people out there that value the compression/limiting more than the music, but thankfully here I presume most of the reviewing is being done by us.
take care

Nov 20, 2009/5:23 pmHi Will, welcome to the Blog and Six Pack. Glad you entered since you have some great tunes. It’s fun here. Can get a little silly and rambuncious sometimes but it’s all meant well. Know what you mean about losing your lunch. I have been living on Zantac in the past few days. Oh well, that’s the game. Enjoy the process., Felice
Nov 20, 2009/5:22 pmWelcome aboard Will,
“My Devil Does”, just love that one to death, either version.
Try to remember, the elevator doesn’t stop till the fat lady sings her best love song (about God) in multiple tempos and enters it inadvertently a cover of it into the Instrumental can. Did I say that already?
Oh well, if the foo shits (last time Nils)
Have fun
Hank

A big “howdy” from Nashville to all you six-packers out there. For the last four years I’ve sat on the sidelines, wondering what all the fuss was all about. But when Margaret and Andy were visiting Nashville recently, they told me what a blast the six-pack was, so I decided to give it a try. Wow, what a hoot! Yes, it does feel a bit like being on a roller coaster, and I’ve lost my lunch a time or two after seeing that one of my songs had dropped from #1 to #357 or the like, but I’ve really had fun with this whole process. And heard a lot a great music from you other six-packers. I’m not much of a blogger or e-mailer, but just wanted to say hi to everyone. I’m hooked!
Nov 20, 2009/3:03 pmyeah ..im like dexter i have a code
1) when i collaborate with another writer i have always let them enter the song . because i hate to make people listen to it twice. and i dont want to fight about it…
2) i always ask my collaborators not to enter it in more than one can specially if its me singing it
and i dont do it myself unless it is a different version of the song
3) dont enter things two year’s in a row unless it is dramatically changed or re written for a can…
4) dont do a half ass job or throw things in that i dont believe in..
that code has worked for me.. but it goes past the “rules” and might me a bit extreme.. i know that but i happen to be a bit “extreme”. i try not to judge others for what they do or how they interpret the rules..ive thrown songs in that i regret entering..
..this year i screwed up and entered one in the first can that i actually forgot i entered last year…oops!!…sorry .. now its in 300th place .. see! people get sick of hearing the same shit… even if its a great song.. which i think it is ..hahaha ..
as for voting.. well that can go two ways … its a competition .. i just try to be fair ..you can only have so many rules ..
Nov 20, 2009/2:51 pmHank, I’ll say anything to make you type that saying again
Nov 20, 2009/2:28 pmHave a Great Gig Pete !!!
Yeah….I agree with Y’All (am I alowd to say that…Y’All..?) Anyhooooo……if everyone was grown up about this…we would’nt have to suffer all that S***…..I’ve really enjoyed Colaborating for the first time this year…and only entered two that I wrote… once each….
But yeah…if we want to tighten things up a bit more…we should not be able to vote on a colaboration we were involved in….But just realised….That would cut down either the amount of votes a song may have received…and / or the amount of colaboration that takes place…..oh….me brain hurts….
I cant work that out myself…lol
Hey…qick diversion…I found a great site today called
Last.FM …its a real handy place to hear something you need to hear…lol…I mean….when we are asked in the 6pack to do a cover of some songs….or a Broadjam opportunity …Film needs music similar to..bla bla…..and you have’nt got a clue ie: dont remember ever hearing it……well this is a good place to look…or listen even.
OK…as you were….
Nov 20, 2009/2:20 pmIf the foo shits, wear it!
There, I said it again.
Nov 20, 2009/2:08 pmPeter,
If your best song is a love song, it should go in can one and can two. If it’s an instrumental, can one and can three. Any other contest in the world that has categories allows this.
If the foo shits, wear it! (or in this case, if the song fits, share it!)
-Pappy Johnson
The multiple slight variations are a pain in the ass, that’s for sure. “lite” mix, “pop” mix, “country” mix, give me a break. . .
especially when you hear them all in a row. The double entries by co-writers always get a 1 from me. That’s just wrong. If they are in different, but appropriate cans, they get what they earn, be it 1, 2 or 3.
If the foo shits, wear it!
