The Importance of the Artist Profile Photo

A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you, the less you know.
- Diane Arbus (1923 - 1971)

Let a good visual be an introduction to your aural art. We see a lot of new members (and even some seasoned ones) posting songs and making connection requests, but they have no photo associated with their artist profile. While it certainly isn’t a requirement, the artist profile photo can go a long way in the promotion of your music. Not only is the artist or band photo a staple of the music industry, it is also a legitimate way to augment and color your music for potential fans.

A few basic tips to get you started:

  • Find a friend with a good digital camera - they’ll want to use it!
  • Film costs no longer exist, and it only take one good shot. So, take 40 or 50 shots and at least one should make the grade.
  • Unless you’re a lighting tech, use natural light.
  • everyone looks good in black and white. When in doubt, drain the color .
  • Don’t have Photoshop? Try a free photo editor.
