EV PL Series Microphone Giveaway

Broadjam is launching another Giveaway Blog to share more great gear with our members. Full Compass and Electro-Voice are giving away a set of the newly reissued EV PL Series Microphones for free! EV has been a pioneer in microphones for the past 80 years. The original PL series was first released back in late 1970s, and the re-issue of the PL series marks EV’s first complete line of instrument and vocal microphones since 1985. These microphones are built for live sound. The PL series has several dynamic microphones and a few condenser microphones to choose from. From overheads, to drums, guitar cabinets to vocals there is a microphone in this series for your band. All PL Series models feature a unique non-reflective textured satin finish, high-quality fine mesh Memraflex grilles, shock-mounted capsules for extraordinarily-low handling noise, and polar patterns strategically chosen to deliver superb sonic performance with minimal off-axis complications. Some big artists using these microphones include Finger Eleven, Brad Paisley, Staind, Kenny Chesney, and the Dropkick Murphys. And keep in mind that EV does not pay their endorsees. These artists are using EV microphones because they capture the sound necessary for their live performances.

The winner of this blog competition and their entire band will be fully outfitted with PL Series Microphones from EV – that’s over $1,000 worth of microphones. Here is what you need to do to win this product. Post a comment telling everyone why you and your band should be outfitted with the PL Series Microphones. Tell us what features stand out and how you would use it. For the next few weeks we will review the comments, and decide who will walk away with the EV PL Series Microphones, courtesy of Full Compass.

A note from the Broadjam Founder and CEO Roy Elkins:
“I used the EV PL Series Microphones while working on a record and was blown away by the quality and presentation of the microphones. First, the microphones came in a great nylon hard sided case, which was great for carrying the mics to my session. I used the PL84 on vocals and it produced an amazing quality of sound. As an experiment I tried the PL80 on some percussion work. Even though these microphones are made for live sound, I got a great recording of a shaker in small studio room. Over all the quality of these microphones are fantastic. I could go into more detail about my experience, but I would quickly run out of space. I have used a lot of EV products during my career, and I have always been satisfied with their performance.”

Here is a brief description of a few features of the EV PL Series Microphones. To learn more about the microphones, check out their product descriptions at Full Compass.

PL24 – flat response, good for vocals or speaking
PL44 – has an upper mid range bump to brighten the mix, good for vocals
PL80 – EQ friendly microphone with good low end proximity effect, good for vocals especially on big stages with large PA systems.
PL84 – condenser microphone that is great in capturing detail, good for vocals
PL33 – kick drum microphone with a tight punchy sound, also works good on guitar cabinets
PL35 – snare and toms microphone, includes a unique clamp with a built in 37 degree angle that ensures a low profile when attached to the drum
PL37 – condenser microphone that has a good off axis rejection, works for overheads, hi-hat and acoustic instruments

Let us know what you think by posting your thoughts.

Best of luck,

Roy

  • Lee LIndsey's comment is:

Headed by Lee Lindsey, I’m a singer/songwriter (www.myspace.com/leelindsey) who is just about to start recording her 3rd album. Tall Poppy Records is an independent folk label that puts on shows internationally – I’m one of the small Poppies here at Tall Poppy. We’ve been a non-profit/grass roots company for the past 7 years and host showcases to help indie musicians get their name out there, network and build a fan base. Recently Lee had a house fire and since we operate out of her home we lost most of our studio, instruments, and equipment. Some new mics for our studio and stage would be heaven sent! The low handling noise of the PL80C and PL84′s capability of voicing for intimate detaill and presence would be great for our showcases. PL35′s “dialed-in” tone and percussive impact detail would do wonders in our recording studio. Heck, since we lost all our drum mics in the fire PL’s all inclusive drum mic kit would make have us 100% ready for gigs again in no time! Long story short, we could really use these!

Check us out if you like!

  • Priscila y Los Que Son's comment is:

Priscila y Los Que Son plays parties on houseboats and at community centers because that is where the dancing public is. These places are not known for their state of the art PA’s or technicians. I have had many conversations with soundmen that end in negativity: more volume instead of feedback.

Invested in an EV 767a at the suggestion of my singing teacher, and got a full, warm tone instead of garbled non-sound.

  • Electric Mystic Soul's comment is:

High quality mics are so important and Electro Voice have an outstanding history.
I have very little money and make do with very basic equipment, to have access to high quality mics would inspire me and give me the confidence to take my music to the next level.
I would be proud to say I use Electro Voice microphones. they will help me recreate the music I hear in my head with clarity and reliability.

    Key of D

Let me tell you about my EV, he don’t give you no lies, he tells it like it is and he never talks back.
When I’m singing to ma lady, my EV ah goes crazy, he’s got little baby Peavey shaking everything.
We’re the super duo heroes, we’re a deadly studly team, and the only feedback is the girlie screams.

  • Corday's comment is:

    Wow how exciting!
It looks that many people who have responded know a lot about these mics… I must admit that I not a real technical guru, but am a big EV fan and use EV speakers for Mains at all my live shows… these mics sound fantastic! Especially after reading these testimonials and reviews… and is something I would DEFINITELY LOVE to put to use! I am an established award-winning singer songwriter and working musician, playing hundreds of shows a year, and have released four critically acclaimed albums on my own label, Envy Records. I have decided to track everything for my next record in my home studio and then hire a mixer only. I was able to do some tracking for my last record, but lacked the proper gear– MICS! to do it all. I would be thrilled to use all these EV mics to finish setting up the home studio to be able to track everything fro my next record, to be released in ’09! My past success and proven track record is a strong indication that this next record will get some guaranteed well-deserved national media exposure, and be great exposure for EV! I would be honored to put these great mics to use!

I am not going to tell you I know a thing about mics because I would be lying, all I can tell you is that I know a good sound and vocal when I hear one, being a women of 50 plus It would be so nice to own a mic that does a brilliant job, I love writing my own songs and recording them, I did get into the semi final of the UK song contest.

How proud would I be to get good feedback on my vocals and to know that I did the best job that I could possibly do.

  • Queenie and the Blue Cats's comment is:

As a lead vocalist and band leader for Queenie and the Blue Cats,I use my EV N/D67a mic exclusively. I carry it with me to all shows no matter who is doing the sound and even the most discerning sound technicians as well as the crowds are amazed at how rich and clear my vocal comes through. I have tried other microphones in the past and have always been dissapointed. The EV mics have a broad frequency range, low handling noise and pick up textures and subtleties in the female voice that other mics just don’t. Whether I am speaking, belting the Blues, singing Jazz,Rock,R and B or the National Anthem,EV rings true and never lets me down.

My music is going to help fix the world…
I’m recording in Kingston, JA in a board house shack with an old AKG hanging from the ceiling & a puff screen made out of old stockings in the middle of gang war & gunshots.
In a few weeks I will be recording all the final vocal takes & could really use these microphones to get the takes done right.

    Thanks,
    Alaina

  • Myphoria's comment is:

I know that you get a lot of comments about people not being able to keep up with their rent and what not (and of those that are true, all the best of luck), but our band could really use the new microphones because we are currently doing all of our sound through an old Shure SM48. Our sound quality is restricted. We are in high school and are looking forward to making music for years to come, we just need to get a solid foot on the ground and show the world what we are capable of. These new mics would be a cornerstone in getting a good sound to start our music adventure to share with the world. I’m sure that you will pick someone with a desperate story, but I hope that it is a true story. If not, our band would be grateful for anything that you could throw at us.

    Thanks for your time!

  • John Masino Band's comment is:

…As a long time EV microphone user, I know the quality and durability of EV product. (also used the EVM12 speaker for many years) Ev lasts and lasts! I have a home studio and these mics would be put to good use recording… I won’t go into a long story about how I desperately need them. Face it, they would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s live rig or studio gear list.
Good luck all! If you win, don’t let these baby’s sit in the box…Use them! :)

    Greetings EV-

My name is Adam Schumaker. I am a singer/songwriter, teacher, adjunct professor, auditorium sound manager, recording engineer, open-mic-er, and boyfriend to a young woman I would like to make my wife.

In order to woo my lovely lady, I want to gather more recording clients and extraneous sound gigs in order to save some money to buy a ring for her beautiful finger. With this microphone set, it will enable me to not turn down the gigs that come my way for larger groups (especially those with drums sets). The 33, 35, and 37 sound amazing for drums, and with these I could easily turn my new home into a recording studio. I would also have an easier time mic-ing large groups with the PA I use for live gigs. I love the sound of your vocal mics (I had the opportunity to use them at a church gig I used to do), and I am hoping that one of them will match my sweetie’s voice, so when i record her music therapy CDs, she sounds more brilliant than ever.

If I get these microphones, not only will I gig more and save money for a ring, but I will also have the chance to give back to my community (Kalamazoo, MI) where we currently reside and plan on staying for a while. The open mic down the street desperately needs new sound equipment, and I would love to do sound for them so my guitar students and my girlfriend can sound better when they get on that little stage.

I truly appreciate this opportunity you have created. Reading some of the postings above, there are many deserving individuals, and I know you will pick the right one, whoever they may be.

    Thank you!

    -Adam Schumaker

  • Fenwickster's comment is:

I am a disabled 50 year old musician. I played professionally until I was 28 yrs old (I was diagnosed at 35 yrs).
I live on a disability pension which, in Canada, barely pays for my basic living expenses. I own a Korg X5DR sound module (ebay $200) Cubase VST 5.1 (ebay $150) and a Roland JV80 keyboard (purchased new in 1994). I bought a used computer ($250) a few years ago and recently added an 80-gig hard-drive ($53).
I spend alot of time searching for free VSTs to make my music.

It took me 7 months of saving to afford my $53 hard-drive…
It’s very difficult to keep up with food cost inflation, much less imagining owning any quality piece of gear again.

Up until 3 months ago, I was using a 1974 Realistic unisphere mic (original cost $69, but I recently found a BeyerDynamic for only $30…)
I did own an EV mic in 1980 (it used a battery which I could never replace in small towns on the road hahaha) but it was lost over the years. It sure had a great, clear, bright sound…

People say that I have a creative songwriting mind (search artist Fenny to hear my Realistic mic processed and sounding not bad, I think. I spend hours compressing and editing my vocal tracks with Wavosaur)
I have written and recorded over 110 hours of material and I am trying to save enough to upgrade my BroadJam account past only three songs… soon, to leave my music behind.
I work on my music 10-14 hours every day. It is my life…

I need only one vocal mic. It would save me countless hours of work each day.
I wouldn’t sell the others… I would give them to young, local musicians who write and perform because they have a true, deep love of music (like I do…). So many must spend money on gear, then go hungry, for this passion.

One time, when I was 10 yrs old, I won a jar of pickles…

    Thanks for another BroadJam opportunity.
(and another investment in the future of music)

    HELLO,
MY NAME IS ALISHA MANN AND I AM A 20 YEAR OLD SINGER/SONGWRITER FROM ONTARIO, CANADA!
I HAVE BEEN WRITING SONGS AND SINGING/PLAYING MUSIC FOR ABOUT 8 YEARS NOW AND AM RECENTLY ATTEMPTING TO RECORD MY FIRST ALBUM PRIVATELY. MY BROTHER IS AN AMAZING PRODUCER AND IS ENDEAVORING TO RECORD WITH ME ALTHOUGH WE ARE SHORT SOME ESSENTIAL TOOLS…MICROPHONES. WE HAVE A VOCAL MIC (NOT THAT GREAT IN QUALITY) AND A CONDENSER MICROPHONE AT THIS POINT.
YOU MAY BE AN AMAZING PRODUCER BUT WITHOUT GOOD QUALITY MICS IT IS VERY HARD TO PUT FORWARD A PRODUCT THAT IS QUALITY WISE, AMAZING.
GETTING THESE MICS WOULD BE SUCH A BRILLIANT PRIZE FOR ME AND WOULD TAKE ME THAT ONE STEP CLOSER TO PUTTING FORWARD AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT, IN REGARDS TO MY MUSIC. THIS WOULD MEAN THE WORLD TO ME!
    THANKS ALWAYS
    ALISHA MANN
