EV PL Series Microphone Giveaway

Broadjam is launching another Giveaway Blog to share more great gear with our members. Full Compass and Electro-Voice are giving away a set of the newly reissued EV PL Series Microphones for free! EV has been a pioneer in microphones for the past 80 years. The original PL series was first released back in late 1970s, and the re-issue of the PL series marks EV’s first complete line of instrument and vocal microphones since 1985. These microphones are built for live sound. The PL series has several dynamic microphones and a few condenser microphones to choose from. From overheads, to drums, guitar cabinets to vocals there is a microphone in this series for your band. All PL Series models feature a unique non-reflective textured satin finish, high-quality fine mesh Memraflex grilles, shock-mounted capsules for extraordinarily-low handling noise, and polar patterns strategically chosen to deliver superb sonic performance with minimal off-axis complications. Some big artists using these microphones include Finger Eleven, Brad Paisley, Staind, Kenny Chesney, and the Dropkick Murphys. And keep in mind that EV does not pay their endorsees. These artists are using EV microphones because they capture the sound necessary for their live performances.

The winner of this blog competition and their entire band will be fully outfitted with PL Series Microphones from EV - that’s over $1,000 worth of microphones. Here is what you need to do to win this product. Post a comment telling everyone why you and your band should be outfitted with the PL Series Microphones. Tell us what features stand out and how you would use it. For the next few weeks we will review the comments, and decide who will walk away with the EV PL Series Microphones, courtesy of Full Compass.

A note from the Broadjam Founder and CEO Roy Elkins:
“I used the EV PL Series Microphones while working on a record and was blown away by the quality and presentation of the microphones. First, the microphones came in a great nylon hard sided case, which was great for carrying the mics to my session. I used the PL84 on vocals and it produced an amazing quality of sound. As an experiment I tried the PL80 on some percussion work. Even though these microphones are made for live sound, I got a great recording of a shaker in small studio room. Over all the quality of these microphones are fantastic. I could go into more detail about my experience, but I would quickly run out of space. I have used a lot of EV products during my career, and I have always been satisfied with their performance.”

Here is a brief description of a few features of the EV PL Series Microphones. To learn more about the microphones, check out their product descriptions at Full Compass.

PL24 - flat response, good for vocals or speaking
PL44 - has an upper mid range bump to brighten the mix, good for vocals
PL80 - EQ friendly microphone with good low end proximity effect, good for vocals especially on big stages with large PA systems.
PL84 - condenser microphone that is great in capturing detail, good for vocals
PL33 - kick drum microphone with a tight punchy sound, also works good on guitar cabinets
PL35 - snare and toms microphone, includes a unique clamp with a built in 37 degree angle that ensures a low profile when attached to the drum
PL37 - condenser microphone that has a good off axis rejection, works for overheads, hi-hat and acoustic instruments

Let us know what you think by posting your thoughts.

Best of luck,

Roy

  • After micing up one of my client’s drum sets (for the first time since I’ve opened my own project studio,) I’d likely start to find experimental uses for each mic being I’m huge in sound design.

That PL84 would be great for indoor remote recordings. There is a water pump/director thingy in my basement that makes the sound I heard in the Ring (the evil girl’s theme sound design) that I’d like to record. I’d play it late at night at high volumes to freak out my neighbors:)

There are numerous construction sites that I’d like to pul various samples from. One happens to have what appears to be a hole digger where a big machine just slams a steal log shaped pole into the ground to make room for support beams going in. I love that thump thump sound, would sound great in my library as a part of a sample I can use for a space ship engine. I have to wonder if that PL33 is up to the challenge.

But in the end I’d likely just use them for traveling and remote studio recordings being they have high durability and great cases to go with them. Break them out every time I want to record vocals with more than one mic to experiment with sound.

I used to do stereo paring with an SM 57 and an SM 58, didn’t always sound right and I often had to reposition them to avoid phase cancelation, but offset the signal and layer them, gives a great slap delay with good sound. I’d have to try that with the PL 37 and 44.

I would literally go from timbre to timbre learning the ins and outs of each mic and finding the most unique ways to put those bad boys to use.

Yep… Experimentation. And a lot of it. Being they are both durable and of quality construction, I could put them through a little misery to get some great work done in the meantime.

    Cheers:)

  • as you know most musicians starting off are broke with no exception to myself struggling and starving so what i would probably do is sell them to put some food on the table that i dont have.

  • steez would love these mics….we have been together for 4 years now and FINALLY have honed in on our sound, and we are heading into the studio as a band for the first time, EVER, in the next couple of months. these mics (particularly the 84 and 44) would be great at capturing the savory lows of our tenor saxophone along with the titillating highs of the alto sax and oboe. our drummer is a beast and the 35 would definitely capture his tenacity like no other…i hope you will consider making our record sound that much better with these awesome EV Mics!

  • If ever……….
I will give the precious microphones to my church
We have a full band, brass section, woodwind, lead vocal, back-up vocals and choir
We are poorly equiped sound wise, Our microphones are very bad and do not translate
all the energy we give to them. I can only imagine what our lead vocal will sound through a Electro-Voice PL80A and the back-up vocal with an Electro-Voice PL80C . Using the Electro-Voice PL84 on the choir to give them more punch and I will be tempted to use the Electro-Voice PL33 on the low brass section -Tenor sax and Trombone- For sure the drums will sparkle with a pair of Electro-Voice PL37. The Electro-Voice PL44 will be perfect for the alto sax and trumpet doing justice to their ” gutsy feeling”. The Electro-Voice PL84S will feel right at home with the woodwind giving them presence and warmth.

What a honor it will be to give those precious EV microphones to these dedicated volonteers great musicians

  • We have been using EV 767’s since we first A/B them against another popular mic considered to be the “work horse” of all mics. This was 9 years ago. The EV’s blew them out of the water and are the best mics, hands down! Over the course of the years, we have had three of them stolen, assuring us that they are loved by others as well. Of course we replaced them with the same mic. In another scenario… Once, our sound man forgot to pack our EV’s for a gig we had out of town. When we went to purchase more for the gig, all they had available were “the workhorse”. We purchased them and did the gig. Needless to say, we were unhappy and disappointed with the sound these mics provided and missed our EVs. The following day we returned the “workhorse” mics and purchased 2 more EV’s at another location for backups vowing never to use another brand again.

What stands on the newly reissued PL series is the satin finish and polar patterns. We have heard these mics and agree that EV has done it again! We would love to incorporate them in our band so that every member is using an EV. This would assure us that everyone will cut through the mix nicely and cut out any feedback issues. We know that they would be a perfect choice for our band who plays a variety of music from Blues, Jazz, Latin, R&B, Soul, and Rock-N-Roll!

Regardless of the results, we know the winner will be in EV heaven with the new mics!

    Thank You,
    Bryan Maldonado / Sol Patch

  • I would love to get my hands on these microphones because our our current mikes (wont mention names)are no where near the quality ev produce. We use ev speakers, tops & bins, for our live gigs which sound fantastic, and adding these mics would really complete our overall sound.

    Cheers

  • I’d be so happy with any of the PLD drum mic sets for our drummer, he/we could really use some new drum mics for both practice and live. Our 2 backing vocalist would make good use of the PL24’s and I’d love the PL80 for myself and maybe a PL44 for my home studio.
I’m sure they’d improve our live performance, & make my studio recordings all the better.

    cheers

  • Hello Roy,

Thanks a lot for offering your range of microphones. here is it how I am going to use these gears,

    1) I have marshall half stacks (2 quantity for stereo guitar)
I would like to use the combination of PL33 & PL24 for
marshalls on both the half stack to get the room ambience and as well as have a flat response on my rhythm guitar, this will give a good combined heavy sound and give me some scope on EQs as well later to mix this sound on my Apple recording machine.
    2) PL44 & PL80 I would love to use on my vocals and back up vocals to have the perfect EQs on my vocals.
    3) PL33 I would like to use on my drummers double bass drums to have that powerful kicks.
    4) 3 PL35s I would like to use on our snare and two toms and flow toms with PL37 on the cymbols + specially on high-hats.
    5) PL37+ PL44 combi I would also love to use on my acoustic guitars coz we use acoustic guitars for our most of the songs, and ti would be great comibnation to have these two mics sound for specially on acoustics.

This whole comibations of microphones I have decided to use after studying the microphone technical specs and I can imagine this will capture the best sound for our Alternative/Grunge sound compositions.
    Thanks,
    DriZZlerock

  • I hear the EV PL Series Microphones are the best you can get so me and the band are a local group and we need some better microphones we have a blue usb microphone. There are so many different microphones out there the one that impresses me the most are the EV PL Series Microphones. the quality I here about these microphones and that they are amazing every one around here says we can make it to be great are microphones just don’t fit are voice’s the best. All of us in the band want to show the world what we got and we each grew up in hard city’s. One of are members Jerome J has had a hard life he has came from Jamaica and just a year ago he thought of suicide we want to help him bring out his best side again. so this would not be for are interests it would be for his.

  • I have never used an EV PL Series Microphone but I have only heard great things about it. The features that I remember hearing that have always made me dream of having this one-of-a-kind microphone is that it can convey all of the characteristics and nuances of the vocals better than any other microphone out there. This brand is coveted by studios and vocalists alike and since I am a solo vocalist about to record a second album, it would certainly make a world of difference to have the quality sound of an EV PL Series Microphone shine through in my entire album. It’s important for me to capture as much emotion as possible when I sing, and I know this microphone would do just that and because of this I would not only use it for recording my album, but also for shows. I know that I would be the envy of all my fellow vocalists until they would have to eventually get one of their own! I is my dream to put this wonderful microphone to use and show it off to everyone I know, so please select me as winner and I guarantee this microphone will not be collecting dust in a dark attic somewhere!

    Peace!
