We’re considering having an outdoor music festival this summer and we’d like your input. We’d like to make the Broadjam Music Festival an annual event and for our first year it would feature Broadjam acoustic artists from different genres. The event would likely be held outdoors in a rural setting, near a scenic town in southern Wisconsin, about two hours north of Chicago. We would love to hear your thoughts about this possible event.
Your feedback on any or all of the following questions will help us get started on planning a Broadjam Music Festival.
· Is this an event you would be interested in attending?
· If the festival was more than one day, would you be interested in camping on the festival grounds, staying in a hotel, or would you be likely to attend just one day?
· What types of other activities, besides live performances, would you like to see at the festival?
· Would you be interested in selling your merchandise and CDs at the festival?
· For a one-day festival, what is a fair price for us to charge for a ticket (not including travel, lodging etc.)?
· For a two-day festival, what is a fair price for us to charge for a ticket (not including travel, lodging etc.)?
· Would you be interested in performing for fair compensation?
· What genres should we focus on for the first year? Would you only attend if certain genres of music are featured?
Or, if you want to offer input on any other aspect of a potential music festival, please feel free to do so - we’re all ears.
As always, you can contact me directly if you wish to discuss this or any other Broadjam/music topics.
Thanks,
Roy

I really appreciate the great service provided by your site. Gotten better feedback on my tunes here than from Taxi. Currently have a number one regional. Do the Taxi folks pay any attention to those? We would probably like to participate in a festival, depending where, but not this summer…too many things going on. In the meantime, we will keep updating material and adding new stuff. About fifteen new ones to get up on the site in the near future. Just keep rocking y’all…love the service and have heard some killer material among some not so killer stuff. Some really talented writers out there.

Thanks for everyone for your thoughts. We are continuing to explore this idea and your input is greatly appreciated.

Apr 7, 2006/12:40 pmHi Roy!
What a GREAT idea! An Annual Broadjam Music Festival is another terrific way we can promote! I am thrilled that you are as inventive and creative as you are, you are helping thousands of us musicians in ways we can’t even imagine!
I personally think a 1 or 2 day event would be the best. Most folks probably would want to stay in hotels/motels if they are going to be at both days, BUT some of us don’t have the money to afford that so camping would be a good option too.
I also think it would be great if the artists could have tables/booths set up to sell their cds, t-shirts, gear, etc… The Artists could also perform at their station/table/booth periodically throughout the day.
You could have the better bands performing on a live stage maybe?
Great ideas! Keep em coming!

I love the idea…I think it would be great for Broadjam to expand it’s horizons, and become an indie musician’s showcase worthy of getting and keeping the attention of the fans and industry people alike…and we all know that, generally speaking of course, live performance can weave a magic spell beyond what can be hoped for in a studio.I hope it can happen…

I think an outdoor festival is a good idea - some artists might want to sleep on location, others might want to use it as a vacation and chill out in a hotel (so posibly consider reserving rooms with hotels in the area) - as for the genres, just try to capture the desire to be heard - and to be able to hear after you leave the festival as well…

I like the idea. The first few years may be the “build the buzz” phase. Beyond that, I would say it’s all about the music. If passion appears at the Broadjam music festival people will come. People are looking for authentic inspiration. A venue for unsigned artists that allows exposure and networking is what it’s all about at Broadjam. This is a great idea. Regarding fair wages…an even payment plan for every musician or band could be tricky and set things up for conflict. If someone makes more than someone else that leads to issues. Perhaps some kind of “split the pot” approach could work.
Newcomers to a festival don’t want to pay too much, but if the ticket price is too little then they wonder if it is any good. Value price tickets…you build the ticket price based on your projected costs.
Perhaps a cause related element could elevate this into something more than just musicians appearing to promote their music. You might select a global issue like cancer, aids, poverty, or a host of other social challenges…just an idea.
Of course, the issue of genres comes to my mind…so many out there and so little time…how will you choose…for instance, I play piano and of course I would like to perform at this event, will there be a grand piano? How much time per performance? I suppose your team is looking into this.
…oh and by the way, I noticed a member’s dislike of TAXI…I can only say that the royalty checks I collect as they relate to my TAXI deals are a solid reminder that TAXI works for us as independent artists. TAXI is a great deal and has kept me in the game since I joined in the 90s.
Let the music ring out in the dairyland!!! Loudly.

Mar 21, 2006/6:57 amI would definitely attend a Broadjam music festival. There are so many wonderful and talented and people on Broadjam - there’s no way I would miss it (plus it’s only about a 7 hour haul from Kenfunky).
You need the multi-day thing to make it a success. This would give time for the Broadjam artists to chum and collaborate a bit. I like the idea of a songwriting constest - maybe we could be paired up during the weekend to create something during the event. On this note… you’re going to need a headliner to make this profitable. You could get a signed singer-songwriter (somebody well known) to perform the first night and then perform with the contest winners the second night… just a thought.
I ditto the drum circles, workshops, etc… You could probably get sponsors for these things so that we have new toys to play with (or try out) - maybe even buy?
Everyone will want to sell their stuff - that’s a no brainer.
I think we’d all jump on the $35/weekend thing with a camping option, but I’d pay more (maybe like $60-$75) for an opportunity to collaborate with a big name performer/songwriter.
I think you have plenty of hungry artists here on Broadjam who’d perform for a fair wage. I can’t think of a better way to improve and showcase your craft than performing among your peers.
A dual stage could work for a multi-genre event… something for everybody…
Just Thoughts,

I am certainly interested, although my band hasn’t quite got the acoustic versions ready, but hey they love to camp and commune. I am an admirer of what you do here and want to support community in music as much as i can. so let me know,

Dan, Ben,
Thanks for your feedback.
It’s greatly appreciated.
Hopefully we can get this going soon.
All the best,
Roy
Feb 2, 2006/7:48 pmOh yeah…just saw that there are actual feedback questions up top…sorry. I think it should definitely be more than one day, music lovers love festivals and the perfect festival is at least two days (camping is the most fun and is cheaper). Besides live performances it would be nice to have radio and press there for exposure and publicity, plus they usually do fun stuff and contests for show goers. Definitely interested in selling merch/cds at the festival. I think a one day should be $20-35 and two day $35-65. I think there should be multiple genres, it would be more fun and might attract more people plus it opens more opportunities for more musicians. And would def. be interested in performing for compensation!

Feb 1, 2006/8:47 pmI think it’s a great idea. Promotion, promotion, promotion is the key and festivals are perfect for it. Plus festivals are really fun.
I would love to be apart of it.

Feb 1, 2006/8:36 pmWe would love to be part of this festival. Sounds like a great idea!
We are based in the UK, so potentially a little more difficult for us , but we have quite a few fans in the states, who would love to see us play over there.
The lead singer of mooli is currently on tour across the USA, with ( (Ex PIL member) Jah Wobble, and has been getting a great response, and can’t wait to play in the US again later this year.
As a DIY band, who are new to this community we need all the exposure we can muster, and it’s always a pleasure to meet otgher bands who sare part of the same struggle, so I hope you do get things organised, and consider us when you do.
Cheers!

Thanks for all the thoughtful input.
Lots of ideas we never thought about.
Please keep it coming.

Jan 20, 2006/10:26 amI love the idea! I wouldn’t restrict the event to genre’s but some careful planning would be in order. We wouldn’t want a screaming death metal band playing near an acoustic set. It can be done with mixed genre’s, in fact it is done all the time. I would say a one day pass for 15 bucks would be cool and a two day pass for say…25 bucks? A music festival with a decent admission price is a pipe dream of mine but hey
can’t knock me for tryin’
I think it would be cool to meet some of the people the people whos music I reviewed on Broadjam…and hopefully I gave them a good review
I would love to see this happen, count me in.
