6-Pack Leaderboard

Hello Broadjam,

The leaderboard for the 2007 6-Pack launched a couple weeks ago and since then we have seen a lot of different names up there—some veterans of the 6-Pack and some new faces as well. Earlier last week, we launched the rankings for our second challenge, Location, Location, Location. Once again, the leaders have changed and the race is starting to heat up. Remember, the leaderboard is updated several times daily and your reviews are extremely important in determining the outcome. Also, you can win each individual challenge that you enter, but it is the Broadjam member with the most points in all challenges that will take home the overall grand prize.

So, how has the 6-Pack been going for you so far? Is there any artist you have heard (besides yourself) that you really like? Which one of the prizes do you have your eye on? Let us know what you think of the 6-Pack so far and feel free to participate in this blog at your leisure.

Thanks for making this year’s 6-Pack an exciting one from the start and best of luck to all!

-Roy

Well,,,,methinks it’s a wee bit early to be proclaiming anyone a winner…….Scott’s right….winning this thing takes some major work….I tried my best against Liz Miller the last few years and came up short…and happy to come up short against Lizzie….but, it’s a long haul…..which is why I’m debating getting into it…and…of course, the competition is getting rather stiff….it’s fun though, huh…

    Rich,

I respect your opinion. I’m sure I’m not your favorite artist on here. Is my music that much better? Maybe it is maybe it isn’t. I’ll tell you what though – I’m getting better every day and I’m always working on my next submission. I will continue to do that every single day. The only thing that I have control over is how hard I work. There are some amazing writers and musicians on this site who deserve success. Yourself included. I will work day and night to make music that can compete with all the quality material that’s out there. The Solo vocal category could open up tomorrow and I could be in second place in the blink of an eye. Points come and go. Often I will submit a song that will score me a bunch of points only to see them drop off as quickly as they came. All this just motivates me to make more and better music. So, if you’re wondering why I’m doing well

This is my third 6-pack contest and I’m really enjoying it, as I did the previous twice. Interesting that, as Rich Pulin says above, there are some 40,000 broadjammers, so even if only 10% of those entered the 6-pack, that’s still 4000 other broadjammers with either single or multiple entries each individual is up against – a sizeable number, no less. Everyone wants to win and the competition is fierce. As it should be. I think that anyone who gets onto the leaderboard at all should be proud of their acheivement. As to the differential in scoring points between one artist and another, well, I guess that’s down to the review averaging system statistics (which isn’t ever going to be perfect), personal tastes, whether or not the reviewers listen to the whole song or just the requisite minute etc etc etc.

From my experience in previous 6-packs, you can be in a high position on the leaderboard one day and be wiped off it the next, only to return a few days later. Don’t be disheartened if you get bumped big time, just get busy and write another entry. Unlike the previous 6-packs, this contest is still wide open across all the challenges as there are over 2 months to go ’til the closing dates.

Incidentally, the previous 6-pack contests, like this one, were filled with great music. A large proportion of my chosen Top Artists (about 50) came from me checking out their profiles from the previous 6-packs’ leaderboards. So far, only a couple of those top artists have figured on this year’s leaderboard (I can’t say if they all entered). What one really likes might not be to another’s taste. So be it, that’s the way it is. Good luck from me to all concerned!

I’ve been a professional recording and touring musician since 1960 and actually played gigs in my local area of Long Island starting as early as 1956…I’ve been a satisfied(most of the time)Broadjammer for 2 years……..in that time, I’ve spoken with Roy(when are you coming to Sportsmen’s lodge?)and Dennis and Jesse on numerous occasions……I’ve also gotten to know and appreciate scads of musicians….I believe that I heard that there are 40,000 musicians on this site now…whew, that’s a bunch!
I stuck the qualifier on the front of this note for a reason….I could list several dozen musicians, all very deserving of being in the top 20 of this year’s
six-pack competition….not one of them are!
I sent an e-mail to Domenick(who hasn’t written me back yet)complementing him on his music and wishing him well in the competition…..telling him, at the same time, that my daughter Brooke(who I’m convinced is the greatest female vocalist in the world, signed or un-signed)lives in Tampa and could even help him bring his good music up several notches to great…..I also told him that I didn’t expect to win because I don’t have songs in all of the categories……..I honest ly don’t care about winning this or any contest…..
I’ve also listened to Scott James music….I had to see why this guy is running away with this contest…I know that some people reading this are going to say Rich is a ‘spoiled sport’, ‘mean-spirited’, or whatever…..Scott is good!
Not 500+ points better than every other artist on Broadjam, though……something about this contest is not 100% cool…..I don’t deny Scott or anyone a fair shot at winning this or any contest…….the scoring system for 6-pack is very complex and I. personally, don’t think that its accurate……I recommend, for future 6-packs and other contests, a much easier system….If Scott represents the best that Broadjam has to offer(and I have my opinion)then so be it…Good luck to all!

    Rich Pulin(currently #2)

I just need to get something off my chest. Let’s be honest. Everyone would like the almighty grand prize on the six pack challenge. But you know what? Only one grand prize will be awarded and other secondary prizes will be also. As to how Scott James is blowing everyone away? Very simple. We (the peers) are voting for him. The fact is, I put Scott on my top artist list. You know why? Because he is good! Let’s be honest about another thing. We as Artists & songwriters love to have our ego stroked. When we look at who is in first we really are not happy with their success – we just want to be in first. We forget to look at the big picture. Let me ask all of you a question: When you last saw an artist in the rankings, did you click on the artist and view his/her material? The question is: If Scott James is blowing everyone away in this competition, why is his fan base so low on his page? The truth? Most of us are not happy with his success. We don’t like it when others have one up on us. When was the last time you learned from musicians like Scott? I think this guys stuff is well suited for film. He is a great talent. If anything, we need to be rooting him on. Like Scott, we have a lot of talented folks on Broadjam. I have been a member for 3 years now, and I think the quality of musicianship and writing has only gone up!
The fact is: I am as competitive as anyone (just ask my neighbor when we play basketball). I am out to win! But if we really look at the big picture, these competitions make us sharper. Who knows. Because of competitions like this, we may have a few film projects and music contracts to sign in a few years – All because we learned from the best. That is the beauty of Broadjam. I really believe that Broadjam (if it isn’t already) will be the premier site in all of music. Professionals will be looking to us for their projects.
So let’s root each other on and instead of always looking at our own interests let us add a few artists to our “top artist” picks and really look at what we can learn from them. Look out Scott, I’m on your tail!

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE “FEEL GOOD” CONTEST FOR SOME. WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM ENTERING. IF WE DIDN’T KNOW BEFORE WE KNOW NOW THAT EXPOSURE IS THE KEY TO MAKING PEOPLE FEEL SOMETHING IS GOOD. MARKETING AND PROMOTING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT MUSICAL CONTENT.
TALENT? CHECK OUT “RAP” (CRAP) MUSIC. PLAY IT ENOUGH PEOPLE WILL WANT TO BE “COOL” AND THEY WILL SAY THEY LIKE IT. SCOTT JAMES MUST BE THE ONLY PERSON BEING HEARD SO THAT’S WHY HE HAS POINTS AND THEY STAY ON HIS RANKING. I PUT A SONG ON “MOVE US” AND GOT 98 POINTS IN ONE NIGHT AND THEN THEY DISAPPEARED. WHERE DID THEY GO, OR WHY DID THEY STOP PLAYING THE SONG?

I’m not sure if I’m gonna be getting involved this year yet…It takes quite alot of inspiration and I am sorely lacking right now, but I’ve been enjoying reviewing without a dog in the hunt. When I hear something I like and can figure out the title, I’ve been able to discover some very cool artists and their songs…Donna Britton and Gus Renner for just a couple. It’s really very enlightening listening to people’s music without knowing a thing about them. I’d like to encourage people who are not in the competition to review in some of these categories, maybe Broadjam can figure a way to give “review credits” out in exchange…just a thought. Who knows…you might even run across a few of my tunes, if I can muster up some inspiration and not let the stiff competition scare me off, that is.

    Hi Broadjam,
Thanks much for launching this amazing contest.
    Excellent packs this year, again.
It would be great to access directly to the votes through the homepage, as it’s hard to find it.
    Thanks,

    Vince

Scott James continues his commanding lead in the 6-Pack. Not only does he lead the overall, he is leading in two of three contests posted so far. Congrats!……The classic big band artist, Rich Pulin of Los Anglees, has moved into second overall. If you would like a lesson in “big band”, check out his playlist. It is one of the most unique playlist on Broadjam as he features many talented horn players and the great voice of his daughter as well…….Long time Broadjam veteran and Knoxville, TN native John Thomas Oaks has taken the third spot. John has 160 songs in his list and is as prolific as they come. He’s primarily a piano player who can hang with anyone on honky-tonk, ballads, rockabilly, etc. John as always been one of my favorite musicians on Broadjam.……There are only two writers in the Top 20 in all three contests, Gus Renner and Hattie Wilcox. Usually at this point there are many writers who place in all three categories. This year many new faces have joined the 6 pack veterans and it seems to be getting tougher…..BTW: I have looked behind the scenes at the entries and it looks like we are going to have an interesting next couple of weeks in the 6-Pack. Best of luck to everyone and thanks for being members of Broadjam. Roy

    Cathy,

Thanks for your feedback. The Leaderboard has been a popular feature. Your feedback is very helpful as we have a continuing internal dialogue about this. There are many ways to expand this feature and we’re always looking for input……..BTW: Congrats on all your success. The work you’re doing with children is inspiring as Broadjam is very active in a charity that buys musical instruments for underprivileged kids. If we can do anything to support your efforts, please let me know. Best of luck in the 6 Pack as well, Roy

As I mentioned the 6-Pack is in full swing and I continue to be amazed at the versatile and skilled writers that this competition continues to bring out. Today, Scott James of Los Angeles leads the charge. I just listened to his playlist. He is primarily an instrumental composer who uses lots of samples in a tasteful and innovative way. I particularly like “The Machine” as it is a driving drum beat with a chimpanzee sound, a woman moaning and a cash register blended to make a very interesting and upbeat rhythm section. If you listen to “The Machine, Moosehead and then Cerveza”, I’m certain you will get the same impression I did. Talented and versatile. If you’re singer/rapper looking for someone to lay tracks, here is the guy….. Gus Renner from Riverside, Connecticut is number two today. The first song in his playlist immediately sucks you in and makes you want to listen to the entire list. A passionate male vocal delivers a soulful performance. Like the first song, the song #2 is delivered by an equally strong female voice. But unlike the first song, this is a Sade-like tune with a completely different groove to it. The production, vocal and instrumental performance is great. The entire playlist is as diverse and inventive as the first two songs…..Kendre Legare-Jackson of Orlando, Florida is in the number three spot overall. She is a prolific writer who delivers her lyrics with sassy phrasing and great skill. Her bio states, “My musical style is ‘eclectic soul’ because whether R&B, Pop, Jazz, AAA, Country, World or Folk…it’s all done with a soulful R&B verve.”. Agreed. She is a 3 time winner of the VH1 Song of the Year contest. She certainly knows how to construct and deliver a song. Please check her out as well….. Here are three great writers on Broadjam. Check out their work and let them know what you think……Remember, the 6 Pack gets tougher as the days go by. Each upcoming challenge is a little more difficult than the previous one. Best of luck. Roy

This is inspired by the 6-pack…

I’d like to see a leaderboard, or (better yet) a Top 100 for each film/tv destination, but instead of just names and points, I’d like to also see the names of songs (with links to listen) in the order they ranked in the peer review for that destination (this would be made available after the review period).

It would be cool if all the Top 10 lists would let you see what’s bubbling under the Top 10.

    That would be cool!

    Thanks!
