Broadjam at ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo 2009

Well, just got back from the ASCAP Expo and as usual, this was one of the best and most informative shows of the year for Broadjam. Not only did we get to see great speakers and panelists, but hundreds of our members came by our booth to say hello. We really appreciate all of the Broadjam artists who take the time to say hi and provide us with great feedback.

I was on a panel with Patrick Faucher from Nimbit.com and Kyra from Markyr.com. Lots of good information was shared. Here are some key points to remember when marketing your band on the web:

1.) Pick a few of the social networks and work them. Don’t try to be everywhere until you get a handle on managing two or three. As you know, it can be a lot of work to try and keep up. Twitter can also be a very valuable tool. Note: to become a Broadjam follower on Twitter, here is the link.

2.) Pick a few key words for your band and try and include them as much as possible when describing your band. These should include your band name, band members names, key songs and your musical genre. Make sure these key words appear on your home page and throughout your web pages; this will make it easier for the search engines to find you.

3.) Keep your site and blogs fresh and updated at least once a week. This lets the search engines know that your content is not stagnant and your site is active.

4.) Get links to your website from all of your social network profiles, including Broadjam, Myspace and Facebook. The more links to your site, the more relevant you become to the search engines.

For those who attended, thanks again for stopping by. For those who didn’t, please put the ASCAP Expo on your schedule for next year. We believe it is the most informative event of the year for songwriters and artists.

    Roy:

Excellent feedback and invaluable strategies to self promotion… And as you already know, whoring myself to digital forums and outlets is nothing I’m ashamed of doing these days.

So many electrons… So few opportunities explored.

Anyhow… I have to go feed Gragnat… but I just wanted to stop n, soak up your invaluable words of wisdom, and once again pay my appreciation to the BJ blogs.

A considerably invaluable source of wisdom and tricks of the trade when it comes to making all of our dreams breathe to life.

I know my own aspirations are slowly coming into focus due to your presence, and humbly thank you for it, rock on!

Maybe next year I’ll be one of those couple hundred musicians that can stop by and do it personally next time.

    Cheers:)

The Importance of the Artist Profile Photo

A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you, the less you know.
- Diane Arbus (1923 – 1971)

Let a good visual be an introduction to your aural art. We see a lot of new members (and even some seasoned ones) posting songs and making connection requests, but they have no photo associated with their artist profile. While it certainly isn’t a requirement, the artist profile photo can go a long way in the promotion of your music. Not only is the artist or band photo a staple of the music industry, it is also a legitimate way to augment and color your music for potential fans.

A few basic tips to get you started:

  • Find a friend with a good digital camera – they’ll want to use it!
  • Film costs no longer exist, and it only take one good shot. So, take 40 or 50 shots and at least one should make the grade.
  • Unless you’re a lighting tech, use natural light.
  • everyone looks good in black and white. When in doubt, drain the color .
  • Don’t have Photoshop? Try a free photo editor.

A Shure Microphone with a USB! What a great feature to have!

And a cardioid dynamic instrument with zero latency! This is the best versatile microphone I have ever seen.

  • Handcraftedtone's comment is:

It’s simple. There’s no better quality/price microphone than a 57. I would take 10 SM57′s over 1 $800 mic any day. Seriously, if you can’t record a guitar or drum with a 57, you’d better start studying the art of microphone placement.

What’s really interesting is this X2u XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter. A microphone preamp… RIGHT AT THE SOURCE. If you know anything about electronic engineering, you’d know that the resistance and capacitance of long cable runs degrade your audio, add noise, and create a high pass filter. Adding a mic preamp and A/D converter right behind your mic eliminates the possibility of noise.

But my favorite feature: Monitor playback RIGHT AT THE MICROPHONE. Seriously, is there a better place to put a headphone amp? Tweaking mic placement, or playback for your singer, this alone has my brain spinning.

ProTools is going to be jealous…

The shure sm57 is an industry standard. being one of the most versatile and cheapest high quality microphones on the market. look at any studio and you are guaranteed to find one of these babies lying around. sm57′s are used mostly on guitar amps but have often been used by many vocalists due to its higher trebly sound which allows it to cut through even some of the heaviest mixes. not only for guitars and vocalists – 57′s are known for being used throughout drum kits seen on snare drums and tom tom’s.

With a frequency response of 40 to 15,000 Hz it is guaranteed to pick up any tone you throw at it with exceptional quality and a tonality of its own to die for.

Introduced in 1965, the SM57 remains one of the best selling microphones in the world today. I believe that sentence sums up everything anything can be said about this microphone. It is in a class of its own.

I love my internet site… its simple… to the point… and hosts “all of my material.”

    Which is a lot.

With album organization to help categorize large libraries, bios for blogging and important band info, and a long list of potential styles and looks for your site (pre scripted for your convenience, or you can do it yourself if you’re internet savy,) life suddenly just got a little sweeter.

Throw in Broadjam’s unique review system, independent charts to compete in, and the ability to shop you’re music to the world… well, yet again…

This one is a no brainer.

    Son of a Bitch….

    I just got licensed… AGAIN!

Only problem… The guy that licensed me… totally licensed the same track nearly five months ago.

Ok BJ…. How you gonna keep this from happening is my question?

Obviously the music supervisors are looking for new material, but they can’t remember new tracks when they roll through… ?

Jesus…. The guy licensed me already!!!! For the same Frackin track!!!!!!!

    You’d think he’d remember that. But no…

You should find a way for keeping me from wasting 5 bucks a pop for something I already have. Obviously some of these music supervisors have too much on they’re plate otherwise. Why else would they forget somebody they just immortalized?

Makes me feel really underapreciated when they do license stuff… Like it doesn’t even mater… They couldn’t remember you the first time they did it… Why in the future would they remember you?

    You know?

    Just a thought….

    Cheers:)

Tagging Songs Accurately

When Broadjam artists upload songs, we are offered several ways to “tag” them. Adding these bits of information can be useful in many ways, but one of the most important is that the tagging function help fans and other artists to find the songs later on. The Broadjam search engine uses them to return results when someone is looking for a particular attribute in a song. Often, by way of its labeling, people have interest drawn to a song that shows up in a list or through a Broadjam Connection. Music supervisors and other opportunity providers also use the metadata to search for songs. So, it behooves us to take time and make sure songs are tagged accurately.

For example, the “classical” tag is not the same as “classic rock” tag, and there is a decided difference in flavor between a “folk” song and a “country” song. Also, keep in mind that, while many artists hear the nuances of multiple styles of music in a given song, the average listener does not. It doesn’t make sense to apply every possible tag and have fans or other artists come away disappointed by one of our songs because it didn’t meet their expectations.

So, bottom line, what is being said here? For our own good, we artists should tag accurately. We at Broadjam want to encourage you, the artists, to market your songs to the widest audience, and accurate tagging is as much a part of that as anything!

  • Protilius's comment is:

Try throwing it into the Rap DJ category if you don’t happen to have a rapper on call. This might go easier on you… Just keep in mind certain Genre’s attract certain reviewers… This will be your audience. Consider that reality for a moment… and see if there isn’t a better compromise to throw your material around in better genres… Worst case scenario… Unique is a great place to et decent reviews with substance… but tough to get a number one just for that reason.

  • sankey's comment is:

this is a pet peave of mine…..broadjam’s tags / genres leave something to be desired. hip hop as a sub genre of rap??? who’s idea was that? and what about istrumental rap beds…. i’ve had several reviews give me very low rating wondering where the rap was. heather at bj kindly removed those reviews but the problem is still there…bj needs a major overhaul here…it’s a glaring weakness that is not fair to bj members.
what about sub genres of hip hop, particuarly instrumental hip hop? instrument r& b? rock? pop? latin? are not these very coveted categories in the oppertunities? as members we need to light a fire w/ bj to fix this serious problem.

The Mbox 2 Pro is a must have for portable recording and hooked up to an Apple Powerbook will make this the ultimate on the road recording facility. Imagine being on the road and your coming up with some of the best ideas you’ve ever had for new songs and need to get them down quick to capture the moment? Well guys and gals, this is the answer for sure! I use the Digi002 with The latest Pro Tools 8 software and it’s awesome! Now I’m just thinking about the opportunities this portable device would create by being able to go to where the creativity is happening rather than being stuck inside my studio!! I want one!

ACM Awards and Date With a Publisher in Vegas

Here’s something you may not know: the Broadjam Pro Services group manages all the online voting for the Academy of Country Music Awards. To that end, members of our staff attend the award ceremony in Las Vegas to deliver the results, which remain secret until they are opened on stage. Of course, no one is complaining about this requirement, as the show is a fantastic experience chock full of music. Broadjam is proud to have completed our 6th year of managing the vote for the ACM!

Date With A Publisher contest winners and publishers

Date With A Publisher winners and publishers

We also held our annual Date With a Publisher event in Las Vegas, which pairs contest winning songwriters with publishers, providing an opportunity for valuable feedback from industry veterans and insiders. It was a great opportunity for John Visconti, Kati Mac, Marc Kuchneri, Out of Ether, and Andy Taylor to get face time with these respected music publishers.

Contest winners attended the ACM Awards show with us. Following the show, our staffers and guests were invited to the ACM All Star Jam as an added bonus. We experienced some great country jamming, including Sugarland, The Oak Ridge Boys, Emerson Drive, Taylor Swift, and many more. A good time was had by all.

    Absolutely Amazing!!

Roy, Kurt, Matt, Matt, and Jeff were incredible! They had a very intensive weekend caring for the ACM’s; yet they spent time with each one of us to help our careers! Hearing Roy’s stories about Joe Walsh was also pretty awesome! (How many people have had Joe Walsh over to their house for dinner!!)

It was a GREAT group of fellow writers- Very talented and professional- Marcia and I have a strong feeling that there will definitely be some co-writes in the near future! ;-)

As far as the Date with a Publisher; We’ve met with many Publishers over the years but this was an unforgettable experience! We had our own office at MGM where the Publishers came to us!!! To have the Publishers come in and wondering if we would take their card was quite a twist!! ;-)

What more can we say about the ACM’s and After Party-
“Should Have Seen It in Color!”

All we can say is the only thing that could top this experience-
Is if one of us comes back next year to accept an award!!

After this weekend- we believe anything is possible!!

With deepest regards and gratitude- THANK YOU ROY and BROADJAM!!!

    What an incredible experience!!

Roy and his staff were wonderful, and like John said, Roy came up to check on us during one of the commercial breaks just to make sure we were doing well. The seats were pretty darned skippy too when you consider Heidi Newfield’s (JOHNNY & JUNE) family was sitting just in front of us.

The ALL-STAR Jam was sensory overload!! UNBELIEVABLE!! Too many acts to mention, for hours on end.

The Publishers meetings were great as well. It is always good to have someone else to call on when in Gnashville. Of course..who knows what may happen from these meetings??!!

Meeting the rest of the Contest winners was the icing on the cake! Great people all, and budding friends.

    THANKS AGAIN ROY!!
