  • I would like to respond to Abbot’s comment concerning musical genre. I am finding many songs in Broadjam’s repertory that are mislabeled especially within the Classical genre. For instance, when a review is done, I select Classical–Contemporary and I find I am listening to a lot of pop songs. What I am NOT saying is that many songs cannot be ‘cross-overs’ and bring elements from several different genres into play. Gershwin, Ravel, and Philip Glass quickly come to mind. Glass’s cycle ‘Songs from Liquid Days’ is a good example of pop elements fused with the classical art song. I also hear a great deal of music from the TV/Film style within the Classical Subcategory genres. This has to be done because there is no single category for TV/Film–maybe there should be.

    Respectfully,
    Ken LaVone

  • Hi Abbot,

Thanks for your comments on Rap and Hip Hop as separate genres. As for your issues with not getting notification, please contact our Customer Service department at customerservice@broadjam.com.

  • Nothing is perfect, but I have notice a couple of things with broadjam that bothers me, the 1st thing is why is rap and
hip- hop considered the same genre? They are not the same and should be seperate from each other.

The 2nd thing that bothers me is when you get a review, and keep in mind its only that person opinion, they pretty much give you a bad review, you then go to their link, and see that reviewer’s genre of music is rock. I feel the random viewing should not be allowed, and reviews should come from the reviewer of the same genre.

Broadjam showcase recap

Well, the Broadjam showcase in Austin was a smash. Lots of industry folks were watching The Jimmys, The Motor Primitives, and Fedora.  The party was on the rooftop of the Blind Pig in Austin.  The Jimmys opened the show with the brilliant keyboard work of Jimmy Voegeli.  He could be one of the best keyboard players alive and is extremely fun to watch as well.  His backing band has many veteran players in it who have played with Jimmy for years.

Then the Motor Primitives went to work and tore it up behind the vocals of Pam Barrett, lead singer and the good keyboard work of Broadjam’s own, Jeff Muendel.  All good performers who rocked the crowd with uniquely original tunes.

Fedora headlined our showcase and played to a full house – about three hundred people.  Their high-energy songs kept the eyes and ears of the crowd glued to the stage.  Alec White is the lead singer and has a deep “Morrison” voice and delivered a classic performance.  Garret Wartenweiler and Derek Hendrickson are the bass player and drummer respectively.  These two are great part writers who play off the singer and guitar player and create one of the real attractions of this band.  Eric Ziegler is the lead guitar player who mesmerized the front row with his blistering, but tasteful leads. These guys have been playing together for years and clearly know what the other is going to do musically long before it happens.  They are a band to watch in the future.

After the gig, I had to get back to the hotel and do a little work.  Later on, I went to see another Broadjam band, Sunspot, at Aussie’s.  Sunspot reminded me a lot of Green Day with more sultry lyrics. They’re a fun band to watch on stage as well.  Good players and vocals all around.

Broadjam Showcase = Awesome

Our showcase at The Blind Pig Pub was awesome. The Red Gorilla Music Fest people - our partners for the conference - made everything easy for us to organize. We gave away free beer and pizza and that, along with three great bands, brought people up from the SXSW madness on 6th Street below.

Day Two SXSW / Red Gorilla: The good music keeps coming

Austin is rockin’.  Although most of my time was spent in meetings yesterday, I did get a chance to see a few bands at the end of the day.  The Silos played at Opal Devine’s on 6th Street and showed why they’ve been around so long. The Silos actually have different players in many cities around the US.  The lead singer, songwriter and guitar player, Walter Salas-Humara, travels to the various parts of the country and grabs a band when he needs one.  Good voice, good writer and lots of guitar fills in the background.

I only caught the last couple of tunes from Cavedoll at The Chuggin’ Monkey and hope they’re playing again as I like what I heard.  A high energy band that had the crowd captivated by the time we got there.  It was standing room only and it looked more like a concert then a club scene.

I did catch a couple of songs from The Blend as they followed Cavedoll.  They’re a very tight band with an interesting twist of melodic rapping.  Half of the band looked like rockers and and the other half looked like rocket scientists.  Lots of energy on stage, and it’s clear these guys have played a lot of gigs.

Looking forward to the Broadjam Showcase today at The Blind Pig Pub on 6th Street from 4 to 7 pm.

Day One: Red Gorilla Music Fest

Hi everyone. An incredible first day at the Red Gorilla Music Festival here in Austin (during SXSW)! The place is buzzing with bands from all over the world. We participated yesterday in panel discussions on behalf of Musicsupervisor.com yesterday. Technically they are one of our competitors, but we think they are straight shooters and good people as well so we are proud to join them in promoting indie music.

Last night we went to a showcase with 5 bands on the rooftop of the Speakeasy Club on Congress. The bands looked out over the crowd into the beautiful city lights of Austin and performed in front of some of the heavyweights in the music industry. A truly phenomenal setting which produced some great music.

Valerie Davis opened the show and stunned the audience with her great rock voice. Ruby followed with her theatrical Jethro Tull like show. She and her band are one of the most unique acts I’ve seen in a while. The band Fedora from our hometown of Madison, WI closed the show and won the respect of many in the audience with a spectacular performance. This was their first major gig of their careers and they definitely stepped up to the plate and delivered. These are three acts to watch in the future.
