Ask a Pro: Dave Codr

David Codr, the creator of the Independent Artist Registry and publisher of the Music Phone Book, has produced and promoted over 1,000 concerts, working with acts as diverse as Dave Matthews to Notorious BIG.

He has also managed a number of regional and nationally touring bands, logged countless hours as a producer and was the talent buyer for several premier live music venues on the West Coast.

Dave was one of the pioneers of “Guerilla Promotion” for independent artists and bands and most of his techniques are still widely used by industry insiders.

Now, Dave is ready to answer Broadjam members’ questions about the music business.

Leave a question on the Broadjam Blog for a chance to have it answered by Dave. Check back next week to see if he answers your question. We will post his replies to select questions on the Broadjam Blog next Monday, July 23.

“ALL WERE WELCOME AT THE COUNTY STILL” Hits South Carolina’s “TOP 10″ At No. 2—–Posted: Jul 13, 2007

A humourous, almost fictional look at the celebration of booze and sexual relations in a small “hick” town.

Just want to thank all the local people from my home state that voted with their ears!!! Much appreciated! And all the rest of the States are “Welcome To Drink Their Fill, At The County Still” too!

Virtual Publicist: Get a FREE Toolkit

Message from Virtual Publicist

Hey Broadjammers,

As a HUGE fan of Broadjam.com, I would like to introduce our new service to you via their blog.

I have been a publicist for over 12 years…and as the indie movement keeps growing, I am asked all the time if there is a press list out there for indies that they could buy and do the PR campaign themselves—any books or lists out there are made up by musicians or magazines. There is no list out there from a publicist. So I created TheVirtualPublicist.com and so far the reviews coming in are great! I want everyone to know that DIY press is possible.

We want feedback…please? Look over the site and let us know what you like and what you don’t like. Make suggestions for future lists—this list was compiled for you.

PLUS, the first five that respond get a FREE Virtual Publicist Toolkit.

Best,
Rhonda Kelley, Madalyn Sklar & Ben Schulkin

Good to see a great service like this coming out of good ‘ol Sugar Land! I am hoping it covers how to properly aim your marketing and how to isolate the most likely successful candidates for press kits. With the ever expanding pool of possibilities resources like these help keep the big picture in focus.

    Hello,

I find the idea of the Virtual Publicist fantastic, and the contacts compilation unvaluable. This is mainly US oriented, my dream would be that it covers the whole world!

Tips & Tricks: Converting Your Music to MP3 Format

To upload music onto Broadjam, your songs need to be in MP3 form. While song conversion to MP3 format is fairly straightforward, it can sometimes be hard to find exactly what you need to complete this process. Today, Tips & Tricks will give you some ideas on programs that you can use to correctly format your music.

Itunes is a great program for MP3 conversion if you have it.

Look through our other reccomendations in the “Technical” section of our FAQ page under “How do I make MP3s?”.

Founder’s Blog: 2007 6-Pack Competition

Hello Broadjam,

Last week we launched the third annual 6-Pack Songwriting Competition. This year we are lucky to have over $70,000 in prizes to award, thanks to our generous sponsors. The Grand Prize Winner will be flying to the ASCAP EXPO next spring, thanks to a valuable contribution from ASCAP. Two other major sponsors, Sony and IK Multimedia, have generously provided over $10,000 in software for the winners. Please view the complete sponsor and prize list.

Liz Miller has won the past two 6-Pack Competitions. She is a brilliant and versatile writer who is getting lots of attention from publishers. Last year, Bobby Caputo, a great songwriter from Oregon, finished second and nearly dethroned Liz. In third was another excellent composer from Costa Rica, Toby Tune. Richard Zeier was fourth and Victor Sabattini was fifth.

For this year’s six songwriting challenges, we are asking for Dance, Emotional and Inspired songs. Those are the easy categories. Then we need a song about any location in the world (a city, a mountain, a kitchen, etc.). So if you have written a “New York, New York”, “Hotel California” or your own “Shanty Song”, get it ready!

After that, we’re requesting an a capella song. This can be a solo vocal, a rap, a four-part vocal harmony or a spoken word. It just cannot have any instruments accompanying the vocals.

To top it off, we’re really going to challenge you. A while back, we invited our members to deliver their best instrumentals and we picked the top five. It’s your job to write the words and lay the vocal track on one of them. We can’t wait to see how the talented writers of Broadjam interpret the music of their peers.

I just read through the blog from last year’s contest and was reminded of how many skilled songwriters we are fortunate to host here on Broadjam. We are always proud to track your progress as the cream-of-the-crop rises to the top of the competition.

Here’s to another great year and good luck!

-Roy
