Ah, the open road. Nothing but dusty bars, small vans and the time of your life. Most musicians could tell some pretty great stories about their travels from gig to gig. What’s your favorite story from the road?

Last summer we went on a promo tour for our album “FAMILY TIES”. The rap group consists of a father (Imp), son (Creepy Fingers), and nephew (Goldie). Our friend Petey Rock helped with the driving. We drove my father in laws Chevy Astro Van from California to Louisiana and everything in between. My initial $500 cash financed the tour. However it was to be maintained by selling CD’s on the road, which we did very well. When we left we had 800 CD’s, two laptops, a printer, CDR’s, Jewel cases, video camera, Coolers full of food and drink. We would stop wherever there was an abundance of people and tell them who we were, what we were doing and ask them to buy our CD. We mostly stayed at Motel 6 and had our share of Waffle House. After we had sold our initial 800 CD’s we would burn and print more while in the hotel room. We actually ended up buying another printer so we could manufacture the CD’s quicker. We met lots of good people throughout the south and had lots of fun. We performed at a few clubs, and a beach party. A radio personality “Walter D” from 97.9 The Box in Houston Texas said we where the best performers after we performed at a night club. He really liked a song we did call “CHEERS” (if you would like a free copy of the song contact me ). We also had our music play on the radio and did a live interview on the air. Sometimes we got sweated for selling CD’s and in some places they get really tough about that so what your step. But all in all we did very well. We sold close to 3000 CD’s in a little over a month. This summer where going on another promo tour for our new CD’s. We’ve learned from our mistakes and after this mission I’m sure will have a solid fan base. Oh yeah were pulling off with 5000 CD’s this time. Please feel free to contact me.

In my home studio (spare bedroom) using Logic Platniuman and a pair of M-Audio 2496 sound cards, a Soundcraft LX7 24 ch console, and DBX and Symetrix Processors. For Acoustic Guitar I use a matched pair of AKG 451 Mics and for Electric Guitars I use Shure SM-57s. I mix using Event Near Field Monitors.
I send the basic mix in wave form, to my co-writer in British Columbia where she writes the flute track and records it. then it is sent back to me for final mix. (All via Internet)
the one thing I would want most would be a better digital interface.
Just some of the gear we use:
Roland XV-88 performance synth
Alesis Ion Synth
Yamaha DX-7 Synth (mostly midi’d)
Roland JX-3P Synth (mostly midi’d)
Moog Prodigy Synth
Kurzweil K-250 Synth (yes, an original Kurzweil!!)
Alesis Air FX
Korg KAOSS II Pad
M-Audio Ozone Midi trigger
M-Audio 8×8 MidiSport Interface
MOTU 896 HD Computer Interface
Mackie Onyx 800R 8 channel Pre-Amp
Presonus Tube-Pre
Tascam US2400 automated 24 channel mixing board
Yamaha 16 channel live “post” board
Behringer 16 channel mixer for the keyboards
18 different custom configured guitars, including one bad-ass Gibson Les Paul Custom (and I mean custom, not as in label).
There’s 8 different amps from Fender, Peavey, Marshall, Vox, Crate, including the big ass Marshall Stack with the 4×12 cab.
A ton of stomps and efx boxes
Line 6 POD modeler
2 PC based custom built computers with Dual Core P4′s, a gig of ram each and 2.4 terabytes storage (that’s 2400 Gigs!!)
Cubase SX 3.0
Reason 3.1
Ableton Live 6.0
Native Instruments Battery Drum Sampler
Drum Kit From Hell
Korg Wavestation, Poly 6, MS-20, legacy collection
Moog Mini-Moog virtual
B-4 Virtual Organ w/ draw/pedals
Lounge Lizard
East West QL Symphonic Choirs
East West QL Symphonic Orchestra
Too many mics to list…
About the only thing we really wish we had was a bigger “Live” Room, a dedicated control room, and a really nice drum kit. Oh and Pro-Tools 7.3 HD with the Icon D-Command Console (not asking for much, eh?)
I just bought 2 Samson Nady SCM 1000 microphones that I connect to an echo gina 3g soundcard, all processed through cubase se3: the sound is awesome
