The Jacks were born in the seedy Red River street rock-and-roll scene of Austin, Texas. The band began as a pure instrumental surf rock group, albeit with a bit of an experimental bent that featured dark melodies, plenty of aggression, and a definite Texas cowboy flavor. After some line-up changes, the most significant being the addition of a permanent lead vocalist, the band has settled on a musical approach that preserves the best of their surf-cowboy roots.

The vocal talents of Bianca are quite strong, and the resulting surf-cowboy-punk mixture is surprisingly textured and deep. The music remains dark, but the lyrics complete a mosaic that is decidedly melancholy, with a good shot of angst. Overall, the final product is edgy, and The Jacks never lacked in the power department, always preferring to turn everything up and play loud.

Surf rock instrumentals remain an essential part of The Jacks repertoire, although one might only hear a few during one of their intense live shows. Apparently, the band is sticking to their original goal of creating music ‘you blast from your car speakers as you cruise a dusty Texas highway in a black ’73 Mach I’, only now you can sing along as well.
