Red Chemist
by el guante

As one of the acts that performed on Bascom Hill for the TAA’s two-day strike, Red Chemist showed that not only are their politics solid, but that they are a pretty unique and entertaining band as well. Displaying tight vocal harmonies, agile musicianship and a unique, horn-driven sound, the band transcended the “oh here’s another jam band” label that I had first placed on them.

Not that there’s anything wrong with jam bands… necessarily. But personally, I prefer solid, well-constructed songs where the talents of the individual musicians can shine together, as opposed to an endless parade of solos, melody variations and formless musical gibberish. Thankfully, Red Chemist (though they do have a few jam band-y traits) delivered in that regard. Their songs were tight, catchy and, perhaps most importantly, interesting. Whether it was the three-part bluegrass harmony in one song or the expert saxophone playing by Jack Whitney in another, each song had the personality and vitality that is essential to catching an audience.

The band also displayed versatility and a willingness to be impulsive and roll with whatever sounds good. Mixing pure rock and roll with jazz, funk and blues, the band was also able to incorporate the expert scratching of local DJ Machine (another performer on Bascom Hill who spontaneously decided to jam with the band) into the mix without missing a beat.

Perhaps the most notable characteristic of Red Chemist, particularly when listening to their studio tracks, is their horn section—saxophone (Whitney), trumpet (Kyle Alban) and trombone (Steve Resnick)—which really sets them apart from other potentially similar bands. More than just providing a sonic backdrop or a quirky gimmick, the horns in Red Chemist give the band its emotional charge, and all three players are experienced and very talented. It is also worth noting that all three do more than simply play their one instrument. All of the horn players put in work as vocalists as well, and Resnick and Whitney also play guitar. It can be a lot of fun watching multi-instrumentalists play and work off one another; the dynamic is reminiscent of another great local band, Prole.

Red Chemist’s next show will be at State Street’s Pizzeria Uno on May 6 at 10pm. For a full listing of live dates, as well as more information on the band, explore the bands website at www.redchemist.com.
