Transatlantic songwriter Monica Max West - known as 'Max' - got her name from Maurice Sendak's 'Where The Wild Things Are'. Like her namesake, Max has also found adventure, transformation and homecoming: through writing songs.
With a rare gift for words and music, Max purveys the depths of the human psyche. A teller of archetypal tales, her voice sings of a brokenness that has been visited and transformed, while her often lush musical backdrops provide a safe melodious haven. Her songs walk a fine tightrope between the poles of human experience: wildness and control, the known and unknown, despair and joy.
Musical from a young age, Max was writing songs by her early teens, composing a musical and forming the first of many bands she was to front. She later studied music at Yale, Kingston and the Royal Academy of Music, and - in addition to thousands of songs she has written - has also composed music for performance art, dance, theatre and film.
