Esza Kaye Biography

Introducing, Esza Kaye, Queen of the Dark Feminine, and her new blend of goth/pop/electronica music. Get ready for a journey through the darkness and into the light. Esza's life story is tragedy turned ecstasy--and that is just the beginning.

Esza Kaye was born and raised in the shadows of Gotham City. Her parents -an immigrant father and an aristocrat mother --tried to build a better life for their children. At the age of 13, Esza's family and world started to collapse. She says, "I ran away a lot". With a little make-up, outrageous clothes and teased hair, she could transform from a scared little girl from a wrecked family to VIP NYC club kid extraordinaire. She fell in love with this new shadow world. Little did she know that her rebellion was the beginning of a very seductive journey.

When Esza was 17, she stole her mother's car in an effort to get some much needed attention. Her plan backfired. Her mother became so enraged she turned violent. She left her childhood home that night and vowed never to return. Broke and alone, Kaye found herself living on the streets of NYC. She says, "I hung out at Tompkins Square Park and squatted with the others in the tenements. They were so strung out. Vacant eyes and beer breath. I just perched on the edges of their world, thankful to belong somewhere. There must have been a guardian angel protecting me from those shady souls". Esza was able to pull herself off the streets and attend college on a scholarship. Her life was starting to turn around. While attending a wedding in St. Petersberg, Russia, Esza had a chance meeting with producer Paul Freegard. (Depeche Mode) They worked together to create Esza's debut EP "I Wanna Die Loving You." Esza had found her destiny.

"Confessor" is Esza Kaye's first full-length release. It is an exploration of the agonies and ecstasies of life. She collaborated with LA musician/producers Ming Vauze and Randy Emata to bring her songs to life. The title track is about how the ultimate healing occurs when you decide to let another person into your heart and to love again. Kaye explains, "In order to do this we have to let go of the pain and bitterness of all our disappointments...to "confess" them and release them." "It Must Be Great To Be You" is a tongue in cheek look at the self-absorbed people we know. Imagine Nick Cave and Siouxsie Sioux getting hot and heavy in the back of an underground club in Berlin. This might just be the song on the jukebox that inspired them to get it on. Esza describes "Empty Chairs" as "the painful realization of what abandonment feels like. It is that moment in time when you hope to look up and see your community and loved ones by your side, but instead there is no one." On the surface this song is almost shiny and bright and the vocals have a similar quality to Dido on "White Flag." But dig deeper and listen closely to the lyrics and you'll discover tremendous pain and loss here.

Kaye stops for a moment to contemplate and says, "Confessor" is my way of saying that you can find love, hope and opportunity in the most unlikely places, you just need to find a way to continue on during your darkest hours. And know that you're not alone." Luckily, we have Esza's music to show us the way.
