Adam 812 Bio

Some artists will spend the length of their careers in search of their true artistic voice, continually experimenting with different styles and different ways to present themselves. While others seldom change at all and open that same closet pulling out the same sets of clothes. Curiously, Adam 8*1*2, despite their ages (17), have an unusually strong command of their music and their craft - and have a more realized musical identity than most of their peers at similar points in their career. They are in fact a diverse indie pop/dance BAND in every sense; not just an assembly of girls who can sing and dance and have been hand-picked by a producer. These girls write all of their own music and can identify with the starving artist just as easily as they embrace being independent. Their debut self-titled album is engaging, exciting, musically diverse and written to their own age, but most of all, it is an introduction to a considerable new talent - one whose music is both smart and powerful, and has the depth to stand on its own terms while giving us a welcomed taste of something comfortably familiar.

The opening notes and rhythm of the album's first track, "Mystery Girl" serve as a curious invitation (yes, that's a sitar) into the diverse musical journey that is about to ensue. The push and pull of Castille's lower registered lead vocal and the call-and-response compressed and effected accompanying harmonies that fly in and out of the left and right speakers - along with a rap section by Brooklyn - become trademarks on the record and illuminate their distinct vocal sounds and styles while introducing you to who's going to be talking to you for the next 45 minutes. What keeps the record interesting and moving right along are the glimpses into those different stylings on key tracks: "Higher" is a retro-dance track that sounds like it was written before the girls were even born and starts with the lyric "We've established a connection..." Sensual and sweet - and with an infectious analog-sounding 80's bass-line. Perfect for the club, great for headphones! The piano-driven pop gem, "Poison" is loosely based on a situation Brooklyn's sister was going through - and includes the lyric - "He corrupts her, he self-destructs her, tells her he loves her but puts others above her." An impressive recognition (and use of rhyme and word-play) by a person of any age - let alone someone who is 17! "Become As One" features one of Brooklyn's most effective rapid-fire raps. Nestled neatly in-between a high-energy dance section and a musical breakdown reduced to simple piano chords, she provides the perfect urban flavor and transition into a beautiful refrain sung by Ginny. There is a sense of excitement, wonder, optimism and self-reflection that can be traced through the entire album, which is reflective of not only how the girls feel about themselves and this record, but how they perceive and embrace their own development both as independent artists and independent young women.
