Bawku West Collective is a loose-knit group of musicians from around the village of Zebilla, Ghana. They play a variety of instruments rarely encountered by western ears and tackle several traditional styles. On their first American release (simply titled "Vol. 1") additional bass, percussion, guitar and kalimba tie together their performances, while elements of afrobeat, dub and highlife churn under the surface. Urgent and undeniably danceable, it is an album that blurs boundaries between modern and traditional; engagingly entwining some of northern Ghana's many styles. All the proceeds go back to the musicians and their families.
