Miles Upon Miles

Story Behind The Song

A two day's trip on a bicycle to get away from it all. The whole time the wind blew in my face and I just kept trucking on. It became a metaphor for the things we do to keep us centered while forces are always working against us.

Song Description

Folk, Quasi finger picking style with a backbeat. Story about travel with solo acoustic guitar solo. Fade out with ad lib singing. Miles Upon Miles against the wind. A cyclist is riding across the land for two days into the wind. Starting on one coast they head into the West and into the wind. The wind continues onto day to and like the crazy ways of the world they can't escape either forces that are working against the coast to coast journey.

Lyrics

I came to the coast to get away from it all,
but my head boxed me in
and spinning I began to fall.
Round and round like a cannon ball.

I rode across the land on a manmade machine.
I drove it with heart and integrity
miles upon miles against the wind.
Miles upon miles with my face a grin;
miles upon miles again the wind.

So I picked myself for day two;
chasing the sun to the West but how to win the wind knew.
On the other coast what did I find?
So much for leaving it all behind.
The wind, it knew me how to find. It knew me how to find.

I rode across the land on a manmade machine.
I drove it with heart and integrity
miles upon miles against the wind.
Miles upon miles with my face a grin;
miles upon miles again the wind.
