Half Empty/Half Full

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this at 40 years old, looking at my life backward and forward.

Song Description

This song is somewhat like a toast and somewhat like an evaluation of life. It has images of life in younger years and mid-cycle. "It gets hard to plan and to understand what lies around the bend, in a world of dreams and thoughts and schemes where rainbows never end. Day after day, life slips away, until it's gone. So me take the glass and fill the glass and drink the glass half down. . ."

Lyrics

Half Empty/Half Full
[Chorus]
We take the glass and fill
the glass and drink the glass half down
And the wine takes on a sweeter taste
each time we pour a round
But we live our lives in compromise
like tourists passing through
Least we stop and wonder if the glass is half empty or half full

When I was in my younger days
and time stood fairly still
I dreamed of all the games I'd play
while running through the fields
Unaware was I of what meets the eye or what tips the hand of fate
While chasing spies and fireflies
when the hour is getting late

[Chorus]

I try to do the best I can
with everything I've got
There's times that doesn't mean too much
but sometimes it means a lot
It gets hard to plan and to understand
what lies around the bend
In a world of dreams and hopes and schemes
where rainbows never end

Day after day
time slips away
until its gone

[Chorus]
