Song Description

Pickoing through the frozen food I think of when Mama was alive and we kids picked berries for her to bake into pies; Papa said the grace while she wiped flour off her face; some people think they know it all but they never tried Mama's berry pie on a cool Southern night.

Story Behind the Song

A friend told me about picking blackberries for pies when she was a little girl, and I love the idea of it.

A testament to a mother is always good as well as a blackberry pie

Lyrics

BLACKBERRY PIE
© Pat Luce Chapman

I'm a country girl too far from home, so lonesome I could die
homesick for some down home food like Mama's berry pie.
Picking through the frozen food tears come to my eyes
remembering those golden days when Mama was alive.

In the fall we kids would pick blackberries on the rise
then we'd take the pails on home to bake up into pies.
Soon Mama in her apron was rolling out the dough.
We'd gobble up the extra bits, our faces all aglow.

Don't give me four and twenty blackbirds
can't eat pie up in the sky
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie
Mud pies aren't so tasty
want no finger in that pie
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie.

Supper was at twilight and Papa said the Grace,
Mama quickly wiping some flour off her face.
We kids ate our dinner just as fast as hands could fly
hurrying to get to that blackberry pie.

Don't give me four and twenty blackbirds
can't eat pie up in the sky
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie
Mud pies aren't so tasty
want no finger in that pie
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie.

Some folks think they know it all -- well, they never tried
Mama's blackberry pie on a cool southern night.

Don't give me four and twenty blackbirds
can't eat pie up in the sky
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie
Mud pies aren't so tasty
want no finger in that pie
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie
Please Mama Mama bake some blackberry pie
