Story Behind the Song

In 1946 two young black couples in Georgia were stopped by an armed mob of twenty men and tied to a tree, where they were shot. The murder was never solved despite a resurgence of interest in the case.

Broadjam Member Reviews

Never have I started a song from the beginning in order to hear the lyrics again. Would love to know the story behind the lyrical content. Well written tune. Kept me glued from start to finish. Sometimes less is more. You get that. Might have to go and check out your page to see if you have uploaded the lyrics to the tune - in fact this tune makes me think that reviews should include lyrical content.

    - Nigel Barrett

Great singing, just right in the mix. It's engaging
I'm sure there's a story there I don't know about and that's a great draw.

Lyrics

I Will Be Redeemed
Copyright 2017 Jeff Roberts

there's a tree in Georgia
that never should have grown
it held the bodies upright
they were tied with rope

I will be redeemed I will sing and shout
and I will be restored
just not now

May Marie was twenty four
heavy with a child
when her head had fallen down
they cut baby out

forty legs that walked away
forty eyes that saw
twenty souls that never said a word
to the Georgia law

nineteen ninety seven
fifty years had gone
someone came to find the place
and mark the dead with stones
