Breaking

Story Behind The Song

A friend of mine once told me a story of her childhood. Her father used to get drunk and emotionally and verbally abused her. When she would begin to cry, he would get the video camera and film her while saying "I'm going to record this so you can see later how stupid you look right now." The story itself was not what moved me so much as the matter-of-factness with which she told me; this was simply her reality.

Song Description

Lyrics

A child on the floor cannot move anymore. You're laughing above me like those times before.
Tears on my face. Get me the hell out of this place.
Defenseless am I. Who do I think I am to even try?
You've been taking me for far too long. I will rise and right what's been wrong. I'm taking back from those who have taken. Cannot recall how it feels not breaking.
He's drinking again. It's just another tear I'll have to defend.
Can't hide my fear. God knows I tried to burn these tears. You've been taking me for far too long. I will rise and right what's been wrong. I'm taking back from those who have taken. Cannot recall how it feels not breaking.
A child on the floor won't be hurt anymore. No more life with the bottle. No more of me will you take.
You've been taking me for far too long. Now I rise to right what's been wrong. Get out of my way. This heart don't belong to your yesterday.
