Listening For Your Footsteps

Story Behind The Song

My nephew Seaton was only four years old when he gave his father this relationship advice: "Dad, when I'm playing with my friend and he gets mad at me, I walk away. But I listen for his footsteps". Wow. I wrote the song within a few hours of hearing that story.

Song Description

Dreamy and floating, this song depicts a person who, after some time of not getting what she needs in a relationship, walks out, expecting her lover to wake up and follow her. He doesn't.

Lyrics

I've been listening for your footsteps
To come running after me
I've been listening for your footsteps
In the silent, sleeping streets
I stopped and listened at the corner
Almost went around the bend
Listening for your footsteps
But I haven't heard them yet

The night gets old and the trail grows cold
I've been walking the streets alone
Laughter floats from the doors of all those late night cafes
A light rain falls; an echo calls
Stirring ghosts in memory's halls
Comes a sigh from behind
Did I hear my name

I've been listening for your footsteps
To come running after me
I've been listening for your footsteps
In the silent, sleeping streets
I stopped and listened at the corner
Almost went around the bend
Listening for your footsteps
But I haven't heard them yet

Are you still deep in the city of your own peculiar dreaming
That you built brick by brick
Every wall, every window, every ceiling
Where I lived, tentatively
'Till the maze of the place eluded me
When I slipped through a door
Went a few steps more
And turned around to look at a dream

And I listened for your footsteps
To come running after me
I've been listening for your footsteps
But it's silent in the streets
