Story Behind The Song
Avid Star Wars fans, the band found the character of Darth Vader both inspiring and interesting subject matter for a song. In the movies, The character transforms from light to dark while struggling with both sides of this transition throughout the entire series. In a dramatic episode, Vader is tasked with carrying out the ultimate betrayal - execution of the clan he is from, the Jedi. Execute Order 66 shows the full evil capability of Vader while engulfed in the "Dark Side" - yet elements of the story lead us to believe there is hope for something "good" within him. The song speaks to both sides of his mental anguish as he must fulfill the execution order...
Song Description
Ominous piano and strings set the tone early in the song and then orchestra-inspired guitar riffs change the tone from dark to powerful. Complimented by operatic vocals, religious overtones and lyrics that describe conflicted irony, the song's pace quickens into a harmonic chorus with choir-like backing voices. A quick break allows for an expressive guitar solo, back into the familiar pulsating rhythm and vocal crescendos. The piano returns,then fades to end the song. The song is powerful and soaring.
