Story Behind the Song

Winter Solstice Of the many notable features at Newgrange, the most famous is the small opening or 'roof box' situated above the passage entrance. At dawn on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year (December 21st) and for a number of days before and after, a shaft of sunlight enters the chamber through an opening in the roof box.

Lyrics

Newgrange

Winter solstice stirs the sunrise
With an arrow's shaft of light
Above the entrance to the chamber
Seventeen minutes steal the night

CH
I am silent I am waiting
In the darkness of the tomb
Like a new born I am stirring
In the comfort of the womb

With the elders watching over
At the birth of mother dawn
Newgrange wakens from her slumber
To revive the winter morn

CH2
Sacred stones at once united
As they face the winter sun
Celtic peoples join together
Now the solstice has begun

In the white light all must gather
To revere the ways of old
Where the ancients once did wander
When the sun was bright and cold

CH3
In the silence hearts are beating
As the rays of light shine through
Though the magic's only fleeting
Every soul is born anew
