My Shelter (Psalm 142)

Story Behind The Song

There are many trials in life and we see in Psalm 142, the psalmist crying out for God's protection from these trials and from his enemies. This psalm really hit home to me, so I sat down with the text, wanting to write a song in a contemporary context based off of this cry for help.

Song Description

Like the Psalm (142), this song is a cry for help, asking for God's protection amidst trials that come our way. Though the text from Psalm 142 itself is ancient, the concept is the same in today's context. Therefore, this song conveys a never-changing truth/concept in a modern context.

Lyrics

V1: I cry out to the Lord
I pray to the Lord for mercy
I pour out my heart to Him
I tell Him all of my troubles

V2: When I am afraid
Lord, You show me there is a way out
Traps are hidden in my path
There's no safe place I can go

CH: Lord, I cry out to You
You are my protection
You're all I want in this life...
Lord, be my shelter!

V3: Listen to my cry
Because without You, I am helpless
Save me from my pursuers
Without You, they are too strong

V4: Free me from my prison
And I will praise Your Name
Then others will come to know You, Lord
For all that You've done for me

CHORUS

BR: Protect me from evil
Protect me from wickedness
Shelter me with Your love
(x4)

CHORUS x2
